Students studying Japanese at West Mecklenburg High School had the chance to interview rookie NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Hideo Fukuyama today on their home turf. More than 30 students had the opportunity for an up-close look at Fukuyama¹s #66 Kikkoman Ford Taurus as the 700-plus horsepower machine was staged at West Mecklenburg High School¹s campus. "Our students really enjoyed the experience they had today," said Japanese teacher Jinko Dailey. "It was a very valuable opportunity to have them meet Mr. Fukuyama and speak with a native Japanese speaker. It was also interesting to interact with the people supporting Mr. Fukuyama and living in the international business environment. It encourages students so much and shows them the kind of things they can do with their life. It was also very helpful to have Mr. Fukuyama share his philosophy of teamwork; it¹s good to instill this kind of thinking in the students." May is observed as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Fukuyama visited the students, in conjunction with their month-long holiday activities, to share his experiences as NASCAR¹s first Japanese driver. The Owase, Japan, native was interviewed by students from four different levels of Japanese-speaking classes. The interviews were taped and sent to West Mecklenburg¹s sister school in Hokkaido, Japan, to enhance the cultural learning experience.
