The latest rumor is that Chip Ganassi somehow will merge his Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing team [Chevy's w/#1-Truex Jr. (leaves end of 2009) and #42-Montoya] with Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota's w/#18-Busch, #11-Hamlin, #20-Logano], possibly eliminating another owner.(SPEEDtv/Jimmy Spencer)(7-23-2009)

Well, you know JGR isn't going to change manufacturers, will EGR?

This seems far fetched considering that would make a 5 car team, and Joe Gibbs is reluctant to run even 4 cars(the #02 runs what...5 times a year?).

I agree with being far fetched. I don't see the benefit for JGR

Unless they only take over the #42 of Montoya and move the #1 sponsorship over there. Teams are allowed to have a fifth part time team IF the driver is a rookie driver.

Well if that happens, someone scratch Earnhardts name of the team name PLEASE!

What purpose would this serve for Coach Gibbs? I say NO!

If EGR was going to merge with anyone I would guess it would be RCR, with the #07,1,8, and #31 being the teams.

Either way if its Gibbs or RCR the teams going to max out with 4 teams do to nascars new rule next year. EGR has 3 teams already but im assuming the #1 will fold without sponsorship and the #34 is just there running a satelite team so it is more than likely gone in 2010. So its basicly just trying to find a team for Montoya.

UPDATE: Don't believe the latest that has Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates partnering with Joe Gibbs Racing, making Juan Pablo Montoya JGR's fourth driver with Target as the sponsor. Not that there hasn't been some conversation looking at that as a possible marriage. There are conversations between almost every organization about almost everything these days. But this one hasn't been talked about enough to warrant it as a substantial rumor. It likely never will be. Ganassi is under the umbrella of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with its partnership with DEI, and he's happy with that relationship. "We have an affiliation now," he said Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "We have an affiliation with Earnhardt with EGR [and] with Childress [Richard Childress Racing]. I'm very happy with that. Knock on wood. We've had no issues. The idea of what we put together at the end of the season last year, it's been mission accomplished."(ESPN Insider)(7-25-2009)
UPDATE 2: Statement from Chip Ganassi per the Speculation about Potential Merger with Other Race Teams: "There have been numerous incorrect reports in the media over the last few days about a possible merger of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and other race teams and I can tell you that we have never had any such conversation with any team, nor do we plan to. Furthermore, as I have said many times, we are currently a FIVE-car team, we just happen to compete over three different forms of racing. We fully expect to continue to be a two car NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team in 2010 and beyond and have no plans of merging or downsizing at all. We are a Chevrolet team and focused solely on making The Chase for the Sprint Cup."(EGR)(7-27-2009)
