Gary Nelson resigning from NASCAR: on the Speed Channel 'crawl' this afternoon: SPEED reporter Bob Dillner has learned that Gary Nelson, NASCAR's VP of Research and Development, will submit his resignation Wednesday. Nelson has been in charge of the development of NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow.(2-21-2006)

Someone somewhere else must have offered him some big dough.

After "Smokey" Yunick, Gary Nelson was the best at skirting the edges of the rule book. That is why NASCAR hired him. Sort of like hiring a crook to teach the police how to catch outlaws.
Nelson has the ability to think out of the box and is one of the more creative individuals in the sport. Followed by Evernham and Knauss plus a few other crew chiefs, none of whom were as ingenious as Nelson although a few of the ideas came close.

Brett Bodine does not fit the mold NASCAR might seek but his formal education might be adequate.

NASCAR will search for someone holding a doctorate degree in Promethean Acceleration. :D

“Nelson & Associates’ will be open for business right away and I’m delighted that NASCAR will be my first client,” Nelson said.

With NASCAR as a client, Nelson will continue his efforts on the Car of Tomorrow and other safety initiatives for the racing industry.
