Biffle snares Daytona 500 pole
with strong run in Roush Ford
Front-row spots nailed down in Sunday's session

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It had been nearly an hour since Daytona 500 qualifying had ended Sunday, and Greg Biffle was still a nervous wreck.
"I am still about half sick to my stomach," Biffle said after waiting out 21 drivers who unsuccessfully attempted to best a lap at 188.837 that gave him the pole for next Sunday's first points race in the 2004 Nextel Cup season. "I was really sweating it out.
It would have been a cold sweat, as a biting wind from the northeast was blowing all day at Daytona International Speedway. That gave the cars a headwind going down the backstretch that robbed their engines of RPM and, subsequently, some speed.
Once he had his lap in the books, one that bumped fellow Ford driver Elliott Sadler to the outside of Row 1 in a qualifying session in which only those two spots were actually on the line, Biffle was hoping the breeze would not die down for those who followed.
It did not, and Biffle wound up with his first career Cup pole and the first for Roush Racing since Kurt Busch started first in the final race of the 2002 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
"It's hard to explain how far the 16 team has come from last year," Biffle said. A year ago, his team borrowed a car from teammate Matt Kenseth to run in the Daytona 500 because it didn't think the ones it had tested were up to snuff. "We've worked hard over the winter.
"I am just so proud of the guys on this team, they're the ones who deserve the credit for this pole. This means a lot. It's not like winning the Daytona 500, but it is the biggest pole of the season."
Biffle's lone career Cup victory came in the most recent race at this track, last year's Pepsi 400. While fuel mileage strategy played a big role in that win, Biffle said winning this pole shows that wasn't such a fluke.
"I think it kind of makes a little bit of a statement," said Biffle, who failed to qualify for the 500 in 2002 when he blew an engine in his qualifying race. "This says that the Roush Racing restrictor plate program has come a long way in a couple of years."
