Figured I'd post this here since it wouldn't get much traction on the Open Wheel forum. Doesn't he already have enough on his plate?

The translation is from a German site, so it's a little rough:

Formula 1 is in crisis. At least five of the eleven teams stuck in serious financial difficulties. Therefore, FIA president Jean Todt wants to push the discussions about cost control in the premier class. At the same time the World Association are the applications of three new teams.

Right now, just run the operation tests. The end of February, the FIA wants to announce whether one of the three gets the license, and if so, to whom falls the contract. To the U.S. team Gene Haas Racing, the former Formula ticket for the Formula 1 2015 season to apply 1 team boss Colin Kolles and the Serbian Formula 1 project StefanGP.

Haas Racing ready for Formula 1
The most interesting candidate is certainly Gene Haas. The 62-year-old Californian has already been successful in motor sport operates. It operates since 2002 a Nascar team, most recently in fusion with superstar Tony Stewart. Gene Haas is financially prepared. He is not only the world's largest manufacturer of CNC machines, but has the Windshear wind tunnel in Concord, North Carolina, also one of the best wind tunnels in the world. Renowned Formula 1 teams were part of the customer base of the wind sheer. Haas will enter 2015 with its own team in Formula 1 - Haas Racing. The cars are to be designed in-house, but initially built by Dallara. Engine and transmission partner would be Ferrari. Since Gene Haas prefer operates in the background, the role of team leaders from the former Red Bull team manager Guenther Steiner would be occupied. A three-digit million amount as Formula 1 budget would be for Haas Racing guarantees to a factory with the most advanced equipment in North Carolina. This ensures that the bankruptcy of the ex-candidate USF1 (2010) are not repeated.

The Newman/Haas Indycar team stopped racing at the end of 2011 so he probably has some kind of base to start from but F1 is $$$$.

Haas needed Stewart to get over the bar in NASCAR, and Paul Newman for open wheel... Wondering what kind of results he's looking for.

I would be excited to have an American team but would like to see said team score a point every now and again.

Gene must be seriously stepping up.

Gene must have a ton of dough to blow if he's seriously considering this. I'd expect it to be a spectacular failure but you can't knock the guy for trying.

I didn't really know much about him until recently but I've quickly become a big fan of this Gene Haas guy, quirky billionaire who wants to race and doesn't give 2 ****'s what anyone else thinks.

That was CARL Haas, not Gene Haas.
Just read that today. Carl Haas also had an F1 team for a couple years in the 80's. Carl and Gene aren't related.

I read a number of F1 teams are having financial problems. It might be time to build from an existing team. And F1 has been trying to contain the cost (but failing IMO).

Looks like he's snagging some red bull brains.

Also, one of my friends from the college formula program recently landed a job at SHR with mostly open wheel fabrication experience, no much pertaining to NASCAR. So now some of us are speculating on his Facebook and he's being hush hush....

Holy ****, mind blown.

All these years. Assumptions man....
Yeah, honest mistake, I guess.

Word on the street is the Carl isn't doing so good health-wise.

Yeah, the Lotus owner basically implied that every team except Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren are having financial problems. F1 is going to the twin-turbo V6 next year to lower engine development costs, so we'll have to see if that has any effect.

He confirmed an application for a license:

While adding a fourth Sprint Cup car this season, the co-owner and founder of Stewart-Haas Racing apparently is mulling another expansion next year – to Formula One.

Gene Haas confirmed in a statement Thursday that he had filed an "expression of interest" with the FIA about an entry in the world's most popular motor sports series for the 2015 season.

"We have responded to the FIA's 'call for expression of interest' regarding a Formula One entry on behalf of Haas Racing Development," said Haas, who co-owns his NASCAR team with Tony Stewart. "We respect the FIA's evaluation process and will share more details in the coming weeks."
...
SHR broke ground late last year on an expansion of its Kannapolis, N.C., headquarters. Haas' statement provided no details about where an F1 team would be based, but the Autosport website reported Haas was consulting with Gunther Steiner, who worked as a technical director in F1 and on Red Bull's NASCAR team.

"Haas Racing Developments has asked for a license and expressed an interest, but at the moment we have no further comment to make," Steiner told Autosport. "The FIA is still in the decision-making process and there is still one more step to go before they award the license."

Haas owns the rolling-road Windshear wind tunnel in Concord, N.C., where many F1 teams have tested in the past.

The last U.S.-based Formula One team never reached the grid. USF1, which was based in Charlotte, was slated to enter the series in 2010, but the organization imploded a month before the season.

Same. Depending on how well Alexander Rossi turns out, there could be bright days ahead for OWR in America.
