INDIANAPOLIS -- Driver Felipe Giaffone had surgery on his broken leg from an accident in the Kansas Indy 300.
The operation Monday lasted three hours and he is expected to remain at Methodist Hospital through the end of the week, said Dr. Henry Bock, IRL director of medical services.
Giaffone broke his pelvis and right thigh Sunday and was airlifted to a hospital after being cut from his car. He was transferred to Methodist on Monday.
"The surgery went extremely well,'' Bock said in a statement issued by the IRL. "Once we see how the rest of the week goes, as well as the ensuing rehabilitation period, then we can make some judgment as to how long until Felipe returns to the race car.''
Giaffone, who is from Brazil, and Dan Wheldon crashed in the second turn of the 56th lap during the race at Kansas Speedway.
