Gibbs offers Stewart a contract extension

Team owner Joe Gibbs has offered reigning Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart a long-term contract extension but isn't sure whether Stewart will eventually sign the deal. "Obviously I don't have the answer. But I would expect him to stay here," Gibbs said during a teleconference Tuesday. "The most important thing for drivers is to have a place where they think they can win races. Our number one job as a race team is to make sure we're in the forefront of what's going on and that any driver would think he has a chance to win in our stuff." Stewart's current contract expires at the conclusion of the 2004 season, but Gibbs said he prefers to sign drivers and sponsors in his organization to long-term deals long before contracts expire. Already this season, Gibbs signed Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Bobby Labonte, to a contract extension and Gibbs apparently is close to announcing extensions for Stewart's crew chief, Greg Zipadelli and his team's sponsor, Home Depot, sources said. Rumors have been rampant over the past several weeks about Stewart's future. The most common scenario mentioned is Stewart moving to the Dodge camp and Chip Ganassi Racing. Asked Tuesday whether Dodge was involved in courting Stewart, John Fernandez, director of Dodge Motorsports Operations, said: "Actually we've got a great lineup of drivers that we're working with today, and I don't know if Tony is under contract with Joe Gibbs right now, so we're not pursuing Tony at this point in time." Stewart, himself, has denied looking at other teams. Tuesday, he said he had received the contract extension from Gibbs but had not reviewed it. Zipadelli said he hoped Stewart would remain with the Gibbs organization.(

Well both deals are on the table...which way will he go?

I am not so certain any such thing as two deasl are on the table. Consider the sources of the Ganassi rumors and what anyone has gone on record as saying.

First off when asked about Ganassi yesterday, Tony had this to say:

(HAVE YOU TALKED TO CHIP GANASSI AND IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THAT RUMOR, OR ARE YOU LEANING TOWARD JOE GIBBS? HOW ARE YOU DOING ON YOUR CONTRACT NEGOATIONS?) "I really haven't done much with it. I saw Chip at the track last Sunday and said hi when I walked by. Other than that, I haven't really talked to Chip very much. I guess the thing that everybody has missed is that the month of June and the month of July are the two busiest months of my schedule. We've been pretty busy on the road running dirt races and everything else, so we really haven't had a lot of time to do anything with this. But Joe (Gibbs) has sent me a proposal to extend my contract and like I said, we've really been on the road so we haven't had a lot of time. It's not been a real pressing issue because I still have another year on my contract after this year. So, for some reason, everybody else is putting a bigger press on that than I have so far. Joe and I have been working fine on it so far, so it hasn't been a big issue."

The last story on the Ganassi - Stewart deal which claimed the $5 million number stated that Chrysler(Dodge) was picking up a lot of the tab. However when the Director of Dodge Motorsports Operations was directly asked about Tony, He directly denied it.

COMMENT ON TONY STEWART RUMORS "Actually we've got a great lineup of drivers that we're working with today, and I don't know if Tony is under contract with Joe Gibbs right now, so we're not pursuing Tony at this point in time. We're very happy with the lineup of drivers we've got."

So ya got a couple of "journalist" claiming an offer and situation which every person involved who has commented has denied.

Who ya gonna place your bet on? If the issue on either side was danced by those involved it might be more credible IMO, but these denials by seem pretty strong.

Hey it definetely makes things more interesting with driver trading!!! :) :)

That whole thing with Chip is just that a "rumor', nothing has come out other wise. IMO Tony seems to be pretty happy at Gibbs, has a great sponsor, and an outstanding crew chief with great chemistry between the 2. I highly doubt Tony would leave such a good situation.
