De Ferran Will Not Compete In Chevy 500 At Texas

Indy Racing League star Gil de Ferran will not compete in the season-ending Chevy 500 on Sept. 15 at Texas Motor Speedway after suffering injuries in a crash during the Delphi Indy 300 on Sept. 8 at Chicagoland Speedway, said Dr. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League director of medical services.

de Ferran suffered a concussion and a hairline fracture of his left wrist in a crash on Lap 52 in the No. 6 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone. He was released Sept. 9 from St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill., and was fitted with a splint for his injured wrist.

“Recovery periods for any type of concussion vary for many reasons, but rarely do symptoms completely disappear in seven to 10 days,” Bock said. “As with any head injury, it is better to be cautious and not put the driver at risk. That’s what we’re doing with Gil.”

Two-time CART champion de Ferran is third in the IRL standings, 38 points behind leader Sam Hornish Jr. His Marlboro Team Penske teammate, Helio Castroneves, is second in the standings, 12 points behind Hornish.

Hornish, Castroneves and de Ferran are the three drivers mathematically eligible to win the series title and $1-million bonus awarded to the champion.

That stinks. I was actually routing for Gil to win the championship and become the first person to ever win a championship in both CART and IRL.

I'm usually happy to see either one of the Penske guys win, but I'm a lil more partial to Helio than Gil. However, I was actually hoping to see Gil do it too. (I'm going to get strung up by the hair of my head for saying that!!) LOL Seriously, I was kinda pulling for Gil more than Helio on that one myself. Either way I've grown grey hairs over this points race!!!

:p

Hi, PenskeGirl! As you can tell I'm kinda a Forum Fugitive. But I wanted to let you know that I saw that wreck when I was there....that was brutal! And to let you know...I rooted for De Ferran and Castronieves. But to get back to the subject at hand....Gil's wreck was kinda a given that he wouldn't race for awhile.
