From Jayski:

Hornish to Penske - IRL Team - de Ferran to retire, Official: Penske Racing, Inc. announced today that 2003 Indianapolis 500-Mile race winner and two-time National Champion Gil de Ferran will retire at season's end. Two-time IRL IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. has signed a multi-year deal to drive for the team beginning in 2004. "Sam Hornish Jr. will be an excellent addition to Marlboro Team Penske. Certainly, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to hire someone with Sam's ability. He and Helio will give us a great combination next season," said Tim Cindric, President, Penske Racing, Inc. "I am thrilled to be joining Marlboro Team Penske," said Hornish. "The opportunity to drive for the most successful open-wheel team in history and to follow in the footsteps of the organization's remarkable driver lineage, including Gil, is an honor."

Its been rumored that Gil would retire for a long time. I bet winning the 500 this year helped him decide it was time!
I am not a big Sam fan but I am a big Penske fan! So I am torn! I know I will keep rooting for Heilo but not sure about Sam?

I am not the biggest hornish fan either, but its going to be weird seeing him drive a penske. I am very sad to see Gil go though. He has always been my favorite driver as he came up through Champ cars and the IRL most recently. Definitely not sure who to root for now. I guess I do like the Mo Nunn operation with Giafone and Barron. I was absolutley delighted to see Barron win with the team.

I'm glad that Sam decided to say in the IRL, but Gil was a very likeable guy and I'll miss him. It'll be interesting to see how unbeatable Sam'll be, teaming the best driver with the best team. It'll also be interesting to see how Panther does without Sam and who they go after to replace him.
