Two-time National Champion and full time Marlboro Team Penske driver Gil de Ferran will not compete due to injuries suffered at Phoenix International Raceway. His replacement will be IndyCar Series veteran Alex Barron.

Gil suffered a minor fracture of the neck & lower back and a slight concussion," said Dr. Henry Bock, Director of Medical Services, Indy Racing League. "These injuries will require a minimum of four weeks to heal, relegating Gil to the sideline for Motegi."

As it looks now, Gil will be back in time to race at Indy!

I am sorry but Gil needs to call it quits. He has always been my favorite through CART and now IRL, but he has had some serious injuries lately and you could say he should have been dead two times over. You gotta know when to hang up your helmet, he has a family and millions to live on. Give it up.

I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you on that one. Maybe it just seems like he's wrecked alot because his wreck last yr was at the end of the season and this one was at the begining. He's had 2 concussions.... Troy Aikmen had many more than that. Any guy on the track is just as suspectable as Gil as far as injuries go. Gil is only in his mid 30's and in excellent physical shape. It's just his unfortunate luck that he's been put into the wall a lil harder than some of the others. Maybe that's because his car is one of the fastest..... ;)

I agree with PG!!
I think they did get a good driver to replace him, Alex is a great driver and finished 5th last year in points. Its just a shame that the team closed shop!

Still, you can only break life-threatening bones a few times and get away with it. Think about it, breaking your back and neck?! You tell me if you had two concusions, a broken neck, and back, and still want to get in that car again knowing sooner or later you will crash again.

Buddie Lazier broke his back at Phoniex a few years back then went on to win the Indy 500 a few weeks later!!

No but i would not mind that if Sarah or Heilo were not in the running gil would be my next choice

alright, i would like to see a girl win a race for once, and i think she can, she needs some reliability and luck.
