Tony is full of confidence. He does well at Homestead and I think he feels like the championship is already his. He's probably right.

But I must say his reaction was refreshing. A little humor goes a long way.

Tony has been much more relaxed and accessible this entire weekend.

His pre race interview on Friday was good as was his post race today. Seemed to be in good humor.

Add ths little exchange with the press yesterday and Tony sounds great!

Stewart did have a bit of a scare Tuesday night, when his plane hit a deer on takeoff from a stop in Texas. His pilot diverted to San Antonio, where the plane was kept for repairs, and he chartered the rest of the trip.

"When you're sitting in the back and you feel a thump and you don't know what it is but you know it's not supposed to go thump . . . I went to the front and said, 'What was the thump?' and it was a small deer," Stewart said.

Then he thought for a moment about what he'd said.

Considering the run-in he has been alleged to have had with a fan in Tennessee, a highly publicized incident with a photographer in Indianapolis and a season of negative publicity, Stewart begged for mercy.

"Please," he said, "don't put that in your papers. Because I'll have every animal activist after me. . . . And all I was trying to do was sleep in the back.

"Do me a favor and ease my pain on that one. Work with me on that one. Say we had a flat tire or something. You can say I forgot to put air in it, even. That would be a lot easier."

Tony might well be the best driver in NASCAR right now. I doubt seriously he would have been in the position he is in presently had he not pushed Mr. Moog at Indianapolis. The public fall out and the fines from Home Depot, discussions with Joe Gibbs, and other self-induced distractions, did more good than harm to Tony. One of the hardest things to do is concentrate on the task at hand when your emotions get in the way. Tony was letting his emotions get in his way until that shoving incident and once he became painfully aware of the seriousness of the situation and subsequent steps he took to try to modify his behavior, it became easier to concentrate on the "big picture", the championship.

Tony has a good personality and quick wit when he is not under pressure. Now he is funneling that pressure into constructive means and realizing it isn't all about Tony. He now finds the job of driving a Winston Cup Car, dealing with the crap of politically correct posturing within the NASCAR organization, will help him make progress on the track and deal more comfortably with the press. Case in point see the interview after yesterdays race. :D
