ISC pledges to host two Sprint Cup races at Martinsville Speedway for next five years, upgrade track.....

Martinsville is here to stay for at least 5 more years. Well, that is, if ISC's word is any good. It's good to hear that they may be holding on to some of this sports tradition. Although, it does read a little bit like they are starting to use some of Bruton's tactics.

International Speedway Corp. has agreed to put two Sprint Cup races at Martinsville Speedway for the next five years in exchange for a $1.5 million grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission to upgrade facility infrastructure.

ISC will match the $1.5 million grant and the $3 million project will include the construction of a new on/off ramp on U.S. 58 adjacent to the speedway, according to a news release.

So tobacco products cannot sponsor a race team but the can pay for upgrades to racing facilities??????????

That thought had crossed my mind when I first read about the improvements. Whatever it takes to help out there is fine by me as long as they don't try to upgrade those Martinsville Hot dogs.

I've got to say...that's a scary looking hot dog but I hear they're very tasty.

i thought the same thing mike so i checked it out a little. the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission (virginia tobacco commission) is actually a state commission with a somewhat checkered history of what it spends it's money on. imagine that <g>

According to the Blue Ribbon Review Panel (April 17, 2008) of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, they have spent $432 million on more than 900 so-called "revitalization projects" since 2000. This website and writer has warned of this waste for years and sadly, I've been proven right. What do we get according to them?....

One of the best sports facility hot dogs in the business. I told these kind folk in Alabama about the way we eat hot dogs in North Carolina and they look at me funny. Slather on the chili, layer the slaw, add the chopped onions and squirt the mustard on top. mmm mmm delicious.

This is great news! The wife and I try to make it to atleast one of the Martinsville races a year! It will be interesting to see what upgrades that they make.

Clay Campbell, president of Martinsville, was on SNR last week. He said that construction was going to happen over a few different phases. I think that the first is the new ramp for easy egress. The second being improvments to the facility itself. New restrooms, concessions, etc...... They are moving all of that further back away from the track to make more room under the grandstands. I'm not sure what else.
