France shoots down pole-points suggestion.
Ryan Newman recently said he would like to see NASCAR change the points system next year to award points for qualifying. NASCAR chairman Brian France scoffed at that notion while visiting TMS last month.
"If I won 35 poles [actually 32] like he has I would say that too," France said. "No, we're not going to do that. We only want to reward points for competing in the race."
What's better? Awarding five points for leading one lap when a driver stays on the track during a caution while 20 cars ahead of him pit, or awarding five points for winning a pole?

that's lame, newman is lame, brian france did good by shutting him up

It's valid......they want to award points for competing....the drivers surely compete for the pole.

I think 5 bonus points should be awarded to the pole winner.
Yep,,,if you got to compete for it..you should be awarded points for winning it, that's only fair and Nascar does say "we want to be fair".....

In other sports points are never taken away. Nascar will take away points for something you did in qualifying (yet won't award points for qualifying)

well, technically, if a pole sitter is worth his qualifying run, he should easily lead the first lap and claim his five bonus points.

"IF" is a big word......whether or not you lead the first lap depends on many things, there is no guarantee you will get those 5 points.

You should never get points for something that happens before the race even begins.

This is a tought call, Ive kinda wished they would award points maybe 1,3 or 5 for taking the pole position. But I see both sides and is a tough call. Id hate to be a driver have the first run in the middle of the day and the last car getting a better times because of the track cooling off. This only playing one part. Id be curious what everyone else has to say?

Then point should never be taken away before the race even begins.

I've always thought that points shouldn't be awarded during a caution. I don't even know if I would count caution laps towards the total number of laps led.
As to qualifying, award the 5 points. It would make everyone try harder and could get interesting for the impound races.
I also would raise the points they get for winning a race and wouldn't argue too much for not awarding points after X place so the junk cars would not feel obligated to be out there just to get points.
Then again I still don't like the Chase so what do I know...

exactly what i was gonna say, pole= 5 bonus points, if you cant lead the first lap starting first then you've no right to ask for 5 bonus points for qualifying

If you get 5 bonus points for leading the first lap, thats nothing special, that could do that in the middle of the race, I side with Newman here, how hard is it to stay out on the track and get 5 bonus points? At least in qualifying you have to try.

i think it would be awesome if the pold winner would get 5 points for getting the pole

how about if you win the pole...ok 5 points...then when you start first..and lead a lap...that is another five points...=10 points ok, now you lead the must laps another five points=15..say now that that particular driver wins the race...he'll wind up with like 200 points...analyze that people.

but you have to consider that the point of making the races impound races was to save money to prevent teams from having to have a qualifying set up which they would just change to a race setup. It just seems pointless to make the pole worth five points, then you would have the same damn thing happen all over again. Newman wants the pole points because he gets the pole consistently...if you do anything, you should run it to where you get five points for having the fastest lap during the race. You shouldn't be rewarded for making one fast lap.

I've always felt that points for qualifiying should be awarded. but for years it didn't seem fair, with the big teams with special engines, transmissions etc. would just kick the asses of the smaller teams. But nowadays, with impounding after qualifiying, and one engine, one tranny and gear ratio rules in effect to limit big teams from domininance, Why not give points.
I realize the big dollar teams will probably still win , but it still gives the smaller teams a fair shot. or at least somewhat of a shot for extra points.

They have a better shot of "staying out" a lap during caution though than of getting the pole...how many poles have gone to a single car team each year for the past few? Maybe one a year? It'd just be a chance for the big guys to get more points, thereby making it more of a disadvantage to the smaller teams.

Every point earned via competition.
