Goodyear officials brought the three drivers who tested at Atlanta Motor Speedway in late July back to the track Tuesday to make sure that its new right-side tire will be conducive for good racing at the track.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, Yates Racing’s Travis Kvapil and Haas CNC Racing’s Scott Riggs spent the day testing the new right-side tires that were to go along with the same left-side tire that ran in Atlanta last March. At that race, drivers complained that the tires were so hard, they were too slick and made for dangerous racing.
"The spring race at Atlanta was the first for the new car on this track, and many people felt we were too conservative in our tire selection," Goodyear general manager of global racing Stu Grant said in a news release. "We have returned to the track twice for testing since the race in order to develop a tire combination that provides a higher level of grip under race conditions.
“Based upon the data and driver feedback at the test this week, we believe that we've found a solid package for the fall race."
Goodyear also spent two days at Daytona International Speedway with Roush Fenway Racing’s David Ragan and Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s Paul Menard.
"It’s data and driver feel,” Ragan said. “We will go out and run 15 to 20 laps and obviously [see] how the car reacts the first five or six laps versus the last six or seven laps, see where the temperatures go, see how the data changes see how the lap times change and obviously looking at the tires to see how much they wear.
“The biggest thing is to try to get a tire that’s comfortable and has a good feel for the whole run but also durable and safe.”
Upcoming tire tests are scheduled for Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Sept. 22-23 and Oct. 6-8), Homestead-Miami Speedway (Oct. 14) and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Dec. 10-11).
