Jeff Gordon has not been shy about heaping praise on Sprint Cup rookie Kyle Larson, whom he thinks will be NASCAR’s next big star.
The only thing Gordon doesn’t like about Larson is that he’s not driving for Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon and Hendrick, in fact, made a hard run at Larson before he signed to drive a Cup car for Chip Ganassi Racing this year.
“I’m disappointed that we don’t have him, I’ll be honest, but we didn’t have a place for him,” Gordon said Tuesday at the Sprint Media Tour. “I think Chip did a great job scooping him up and backing him the way they have and giving him opportunities to go showcase his talent and now getting him into Cup, where he truly belongs.”
Both Gordon and Tony Stewart, who have won seven Cup championships between them, have called Larson the best young driver to come along since they were rookies in 1993 and 1999.
“I see a guy that gets more out that car than anybody can get out of it,” Gordon said. “He’s just got a lot of talent and is creative and searching around the racetrack.
Gordon said he regrets that he and team owner Rick Hendrick were not able to strike a deal with Larson.
“I had him sitting in my chair in my office talking to him about his future, and I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to put something together,” he said. “But I’m very happy for him and our sport is going to benefit from it.”
