Checks And Balances

NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 6)- - Tony Stewart was honored as the 2002 Winston Cup champion at the annual awards ceremony on Friday night at The Manhattan Center. The ceremony, filled with a copious amount of mindless drivel, featured the reading of prepared speeches off teleprompters from the top ten drivers in the final points standings. Stewart received praise from his competitors, sponsor, and race team, as well as a check for more than $9 million. Jeff Gordon collected a check in the amount of $1.086 million for finishing fourth in the series point standings.

My reaction? Tony got the Championship and a rather nice check to go with it. Jeffy was three positions shy of Tony........but he got a nice check too. :)

Obviously that would have read totally different from that had Gordon been the one to collect the biggest check! Incidentally Stewarts check was for sightly over 4 million, Gordon must have drank quite a bit to perceive that as more than double that amount!

Oh so it was a trick thing? Missed the 9 mill vs 4........observant DJ!:D

The #20 TEAM earned $9,163,761 for the 2002 season but that was not presented to Tony on Dec. 6, that was all totaled, race purses, appearances, bonuses and championship $$$. Gordon's team topped $4 million from what I have heard and also Gordon topped the merchandise sales for the third consecutive year.

Incidentally the Nascar sanctioned events grossed $1.869 billion dollars and drivers collected approximately 18% of that.. Read that somewhere earlier today.

Seems like whoever wrote it was bored, like me and mentioned how much money each of those guys got. Point? None.

:) Folks, I could be wrong, but I think you ALL missed the point the poster was making.

I believe he was trying to show how a drivers site was discribing the banquet.....NOTE ..BOLD WORDS:)

yes, i agree. they were talking about the flopped soap opera effect:p

Simply saw it on Gordon's site and had a mixed reaction and was wondering how others felt.

I just thought it would be different if Gordon won the Championship. But, he didn't!

um yes it would be lol just like Im sure the stewart sites would say something diffrent if stewart hadn't won. lol pointless

Stewart's site doesn't say anything except for what was said at the awards and lots of photos. Smack500, the fact is what is mentioned on Jeffy's site. You cannot say "what would have been said" if Tony wasn't the champion.

On www.jimmiejohnson.com (who finished 5th) all you see is photos of the awards banquet that he appeared to be very proud to attend. Now there's a class act.

;) Did you all notice how bored everybody looked? Nobody was smiling. Joe Gibbs didn't smile until he was speaking. And I say this ......not as a slight to Toni Stewart.......cuz last year at Gordon's awards banquet the audience looked like they were totally bored to tears and wishing they were somewhere else also. Heck, at Toni's, the TV camera's panned to Mikey and he appeared to be asleep! The people that are completely involved in NASCAR and the politics that goes with it knew that the speeches were all canned and rehearsed and for the most part, IMO, came off forced and contrived. It is very apparent that these guys are like fish outta water at the banquet....but if I were one of them too, I'd go thru the wringer to receive my huge check! ;)

The ceremony was boring, the bold part sounds right to me.

Awards ceremonies are almost always boring. Even for the awardees.......I'm sure most of them would much rather have their trophies and checks handed out in the winners circle at the time they won........but, it's part of the game. I just hope that the Winston Cup Awards never get to be the silly extravagaza that the Academy Awards have become.:(

DE, you have something there, but if those that be want to have bigger TV ratings for this circus, they will do whatever it takes.

To me, they seemed alot more stressed out than usual. They kept messing there lines up. Probably was that stupid screen they had to read off of. Hopefully they don't have that or the dancers.

No, it would have been the same from the guy who wrote it. I thought you were implying that Jeff wrote this statement, which he didn't obviously. I don't care who is the champ, that banquet was a borefest and it usually is. I doubt if Gordon has ever even been to "his" site.:p
