How much parking a track has varies widely among tracks that host Sprint Cup Series events.

• Las Vegas Motor Speedway (131,000 capacity) has 35,000 parking spaces plus buses that transport fans in from The Strip.

• Michigan International Speedway (109,000) has 31,000 parking spaces and 9,000 campsites plus private lots in the vicinity of the track.

• Talladega International Speedway (135,000) has space for approximately 50,000 cars and 20,000 campers.

• Dover International Speedway (135,000) has 20,000 parking spots, 3,500 recreational vehicle spots, 4,600 spots at two park-and-ride locations and several businesses in the area offer parking.

• Texas Motor Speedway (137,000) has room to park about 80,000 cars.

• Daytona International Speedway (147,000) has 38,000 parking spaces in lots it owns plus an estimated 18,000 spots available in the malls and businesses surrounding the track.

• Bristol Motor Speedway (158,000) camps about 60 percent of its fans and all parking on site is by permit. Last year, 198 permits were issued to off-site entities to park cars.

For comparison Kentucky states they have 107,000 seats and 33,000 parking spots.
Maybe someone was taking up two spots?

I found this part of Waltrip's interveiw interesting.

"Menzer: Why did they only have one main gate open at the front of the race track, when it appeared they could have had up to three open?

Waltrip: I don't understand that, either. Because you can go on down to the next exit and come in the back way to the race track. That's actually the best way to get in. So I don't know. ... They just blew it. The bottom line is they blew the parking thing badly. I think if it had been handled differently, it would have been congested but it never would have turned into the fiasco that it did. The sad thing that they're all realizing today is that, you know, we didn't do our job."

Was there really only one main gate open to the speedway?

The majority of Bristol's parking is not on BMS property. If not for neighboring businesses, fields, and houses that allow parking, there wouldn't be near enough parking for BMS either. Sounds to me like somebody should buy some of the adjoining property to Kentucky, clear it, and make it into a parking lot. A person could make their money back in a couple of years.

That is if they come back.

One way to beat that parking..... camp. Way better than tailgating anyhow. Bristol has to be one of the best places to stay. In my case only $99 for the week and some of the best friends that you'll ever meet.
