I've been battling black ants since the beginning of summer. They are way worse this year than any of my previous 13 years living here. I used to be able to control them with residual spray but the tree huggers in California have made it so we only have access now to plant-based insecticides.
A guy working at a local pest control company recently told me about Terro. I don't know how this stuff has stayed off my radar. Active ingredient is Borax, so it's safe. Sweet liquid filled trays attract the ants. The borax is slow acting so it allows the ants to take it back to the nest and share with others before killing them.
Highly recommended. :)

I have been using it for a few years now. The cardboard trays will wear out before long. I take metal flashing and cut it into 3" by 1" trays. I put it around the outside of my garage and keep it there all day long. It will soon wipe out a whole colony if you keep it coming.

Try this. I have also that if you leave a garden hose in the yard, ants will travel along that because it is easier than going through the grass. I take a 3 foot piece of hose, lay it in the yard and put several drops along the top of the hose. It will soon be covered with several ants. Keep putting it on day after day and your ants will soon disappear.

You will also be surprised and the different sizes of ants there are. I have seen a least 5 or 6 different sizes. They love the stuff.

Some ants are very smart, too. They know it is bad and they will carry dirt and fill the drops with dirt so that the other ants won't eat it. At first I thought the wind was blowing dust into it. But after watching, I noticed that ants were filling the trays up with dirt. So, keep an eye out for that too.
