Alabama is removing basketball coach Mark Gottfried from his position, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Monday.
An official announcement is expected in the next 24 hours.
The Tuscaloosa News initially reported the news.
Gottfried entered his 11th season at Alabama on the proverbial "hot seat" because he had missed the NCAA tournament each of the past two years, and he didn't help his cause with a 12-7 start this season. Additionally, point guard Ron Steele effectively quit the team last week. And though Steele has been vague about his reasons, multiple sources told CBSSports.com that a falling out with Gottfried played a large role.
Assistant Phillip Pearson is expected to take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis.
Alabama will then conduct a national search to find a permanent replacement

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Mark Gottfried has quit as basketball
coach at Alabama.
The school said Monday he resigned and assistant Phillip Pearson
will take over immediately as interim head coach.
Gottfried was in his 11th year at Alabama. The Tide's record
this year is 12-7, including 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference.
Gottfried's teams have missed the NCAA tournament the last two
years.
The coach has been criticized over the recent departure of star
guard Ronald Steele, who skipped the end of his senior season. The
school cited an injury, but Steele said there was more to his
decision than that.
