JUSTIN -- Two men were taken by air ambulance to area hospitals after being shot Thursday morning during an apparent theft near Justin, sheriff’s officials said.

Dispatchers received a call at 6:05 a.m. that a business owner discovered two men attempting to steal an air conditioning from his business, Texas Motor Speedway Driving School, in the 9000 block of Industrial Street in Justin’s warehouse district, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Roger Griggs.

The business owner fired one shot from a shotgun, striking both men, Griggs said. Their conditions were unknown.

Authorities are investigating.

That is great on several levels. You take out a couple of thieves and conserve ammo at the same time. Nice!

Watch this one closely. I'll wager they get off, and the store owner gets charges with discharging a firearm in an unsafe manner, or some other bogus charge. The media will be all over him for firing when his life wasn't in danger. Watch and see if I'm wrong.

he's fine its texas

You may be right, here you have to watch them drive off in your car. Can't shoot to protect property. You can only shoot'em if inside your home or if outside your life is threatened.

Gun store owner in Providence started sleeping on a cot in the back room because he had been broken into so many times. Dumb and dumber backed their car thru the front window. He dropped them both with a .45 he had just cleaned and loaded with Hydro-shocks.

Even dumber atty general charged him with 2 counts of murder 1, "lying in wait" is a crime. He was found not guilty but spent a ton on atty fees. Then D & D momma sued for unlawful death along with all the momma's d & d had donated sperm too. More money on attys. He won those cases too.

D & D were both in their 20's IIRC and no stranger to the law with lengthy rap sheets. As my cuz would say "They needed killin'":)

Momma's boy is a good boy.

IMHO ... the world is the way it is today because we stopped killing 'those who need killing'. The prison systems are overloaded with people who have no intention of ever conforming to society. Hell, look at today's kid's heros .... they're to an individual ... criminals. Ever watched todays 'teen shows? Every one of them ... kids running about, ruling the roost, either not a parent in sight, or the parents are ineffectual.

I think you might be, Perfessor. Remember, we're talking Texas here. This is the State that put an express line into the execution chamber (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

It sounds like a case of really good gun control to me.

Sounds like a chapter of Lord of the Flies to me.

I spend a great deal of my time hoping I'm wrong. I'm one of the few people in the world who's happy to be wrong. I wish it happened more often.

On the NBC news down here, they said the Texas Rangers have spoken to the owner and that it's still under investigation. Also said it isn't the first time for such a crime on that specific street. One is in critical, the other in serious condition.

JUSTIN — It was chaotic, wild, and right out of the wild, wild west.

Mike Starr, a gun-toting business owner, took the law into his own hands early Thursday and shot two thieves attempting to steal air conditioning units.

Starr — who owns Team Texas High Performance Driving School — lives on the business property in the 9500 block of Industrial Road just south of Justin in unincorporated Denton County. He said he heard some noise about 5:30 a.m. and went outside to investigate armed with what he described as a "scatter gun."

Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Tom Reedy said when the owner spotted his stolen property inside the bed of the crooks' truck, he opened fire on 53-year-old Joseph Vergal Prescott of Grand Prairie and 55-year-old Michael Allen O'Shea of Irving with a powerful 12-gauge shotgun with buckshot load.

The suspects were airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for treatment. Prescott was in critical condition; O’Shea was reported in stable condition.

Authorities said O'Shea has a lengthy criminal record, having served several prison terms for burglary, forgery, drug, and assault charges. Prescott had only traffic infractions.

Now they both face charges of felony theft over $1,500.

Starr was apparently was within his rights when he opened fire, thanks to Texas' Castle Law. "My layman understanding of the law is that the property owner has the right to protect his property and his safety," Reedy said.

Bottom line: All Texans have can use deadly force, if used on their own property to protect themselves or their belongings. No gun license is required, either.

It is a lesson O'Shea and Prescott learned the hard way.

"Stealing a man's air conditioner in the summertime is a pretty serious offense, but we don't recommend people going around shooting people," Reedy said.

If I remember correctly Mike Starr is related to David Starr the truck series driver.

I'm sure there are bleeding hearts out there who think he was wrong to protect his property from criminals by using deadly force. If these losers had been obeying the law then there would have been no need, or even opportunity for the use of said force.

Personally, it would bother me to kill someone in a situation like this. However, it would bother me more if I let someone steal from my family and I didn't do anything about it.

Aren't you supposed to aim for the shoulder or knee? That way they're disabled but nothing life threatening?

In many areas, a surviving criminal can sue you for damages he incurred while in the commission of a crime. A dead guy can't sue you. In addition, if these guys were armed, simply injuring them would allow them an opportunity to kill the person protecting their property.

a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot is designed to disperse over a large target area. you just fire in the general direction. <g>
