Didn't see all these guys race, but I'd say as of now:

5. Jeff Gordon
6. Darrell Waltrip
7. Cale Yarborough
8. Bobby Allison
9. Kyle Busch
10. Tony Stewart

Since this is up for debate, who would you rank as the greatest drivers of all time? Give me your top-10.

I actually made this thread before! Its somewhere on this site.

These kind of discussions are the absolute most fun. Thanks for "bumping" it.

2. Jimmie Johnson
3. Jeff Gordon
4. David Pearson
5. Richard Petty
6. DW
7. Bobby Allison
8. Cale Yarborough

My top 5 as well.

I think Dale sr and JJ are interchangable. If JJ gets to 8 and 100 then okay.

Speaking of which, which do you think is more likely? 8, or 100

I honestly really enjoy Jimmie Johnson. I think it's so cool we have gotten to watch him in this era. I really want him to get 8. It will be tough as they all have been.

I think it might be a safer bet to say 100, but like I said that's just because it's so hard to bank on anyone taking a cup these days. So much can happen in just that one race, and that's if you get to that point.

1. Dale Sr
2. Jimmie Johnson

4. Cale Yarborough
5. Jeff Gordon
6. Mark Martin
7. Rusty Wallace
8. Darrell Waltrip

Hey! you forgot whatshisname.....the guy from Alabama with 84 wins and a champ!
Really there are a lot of drivers who arguably could be top 10, so it really came down to names I thought of first, but he is right on the edge

NASCAR or across all forms of racing? If it's all forms of racing the I'll take Michael Schumacher and work my way down

Petty
Earnhardt
Johnson
Gordon
Bill Elliott
Rusty Wallace
David Pearson
Cale yarbourgh
DW
Kyle Busch

Although he may legitimately belong on that list in terms of skill at driving a race car, it’s hard for me to see Kyle Busch on a list of “Greatest” anythings other than “Greatest Pains in the A$$”

So hard to compare with the different eras. Competition is so much closer today.
Richard Petty won 10 races in a row once. He also won 27 races in one season. Nowhere near the competition that we have today.

1. Cale Yarborough
2. Kyle Busch
3. Dale Earnhardt
4. Davey Allison
5. Rusty Wallace
6. Darryl Waltrip
7. Jimmie Johnson
8. Lee Petty
9. Bill Elliot
10. Mark Martin

Don't forget that Bobby Allison probably won races for more different car owners than anybody in history (including himself) and if he could have gotten along with his car owners better could probably have about 120 wins. Cale's three titles in a row in the mid-70's could very well have been Bobby's, but Bobby and Junior couldn't work together. Bobby had a lot of wasted seasons driving lesser cars because of his inability to get along.

This is like the Hall of Fame for me. No way to measure. I can give you my top 10 favorite drivers.....kind of like this thread and the Hall of Fame in many ways.

Earnhardt
Pearson
Petty
Johnson
Allison
Gordon
Waltrip
Yarborough
Stewart
Kyle Busch
Tough to leave Wallace, Junior Johnson and Lee Petty off. 5-10 are somewhat interchangeable

I'll give it a shot:
Petty
Earnhardt
Gordon
Jimmie Johnson
Pearson
Waltrip
Bobby Allison
Yarborough
Junior Johnson
Tony Stewart

Davey Allison
Harry Gant
Sterling Marlin
Ken Schrader
Derrick Cope
Lake Speed
Ernie Irvan
Kenny Irwin
Chad Little
Dick Trickle

In no particular order, although Derrick Cope should be at the top of the list.

It's impossible to rank the best of different eras against each other IMO. It just comes down to preferences, biases, and flimsy assumptions. So my list of Nascar's greatest is in chronological order...

Herb Thomas
Lee Petty
Ned Jarrett
David Pearson
Richard Petty
Cale Yarborough
Bobby Allison
Darrell Waltrip
Dale Earnhardt
Jeff Gordon
Jimmie Johnson

My top 10
1. Richard Petty
2. Dale Earnhardt
3. David Pearson
4. Jeff Gordon
5. Darrel Waltrip
6. Bobby Allison
7. Jimmie Johnson
8. Cale Yarborough
9. Rusty Wallace
10. Lee Petty

No order:

Mario Andretti
Mark Donahue
Jim Clark
Ronnie Peterson
Dan Gurney
Ayrton Senna
AJ Foyt
Alain Prost
Alan Jones
Niki Lauda

That's not including NASCAR atm, but Mario is like the undisputed GOAT IMHO.

Mario MIGHT have been more talented, but Foyt was a smarter racer. Mario cost himself too many races by asking more than the situation could give. Indy is a prime example. Until recently, Indy was more like a 24 hour endurance race. Guys like Foyt and Al Unser knew how to get the car to the finish, and have a car that could still win the race.

Mario won everything except LeMans. A.J. Foyt won everything except a world championship. To me you could pick either as best and still be right.

My Top 10 overall drivers
Michael Schumacher
Mario Andretti
Ayrton Senna
Juan Manuel Fangio
Alain Prost
AJ Foyt
Emerson Fittapaldi
Rick Mears
Nigel Mansell
Dan Gurney
Honorable Mention: Sebastian Vettel, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart, Juan Montoya, Alex Zanardi, Parnelli Jones, Kimi Rakionnen, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt,Scott Dixon, Jeff Gordon

Sebastian Loeb and Schumi are definitely on my list. My personal HOF, I think Raikkonen is a bit overrated. He should have won multiple championships with Mclaren, but their cars were so fragile. Montoya... He lost his luster after he left Williams... Franchitti or Dixon, a pretty hard toss up.

Hmmmm......no Silver Fox = No Bueno

Hmmmm......no Silver Fox = No Bueno

I don't think a LOT of people realize just how great Pearson was. 105 wins and 89 runner-ups in only 574 starts, wins in 17 consecutive seasons, won the championship every time he ran the full schedule, 113 poles, a winning record VS Petty head to head. Probably better than Petty, although it's not very popular to say that out loud.

Pearson was a better driver than Petty.
Win percentage proves that.
