Green out, Andretti in No. 1 after Sunday

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Sunday's Southern 500 is likely Jeff Green's last weekend in Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s No. 1 Chevrolet this season.
Ty Norris, DEI's executive vice president of motorsports, said Friday that John Andretti, fired from Petty Enterprises earlier this season, would drive the No. 1 next weekend at Richmond, Va., and for several other races this season.

"John did a really good job for us at Indianapolis and we were really impressed," Norris said. Andretti qualified and drove a fourth DEI entry at Indy.

"We had an opportunity to see if we could improve our performance. We just talked to him about getting in the car for a while. There is no set time or agenda," Norris said.

"There's no sense in locking ourselves into anything. But if John does what he did for us at Indianapolis, he really impressed a lot of people with what he did in our car there."

Green was hired in May after former driver Steve Park was released by DEI. Green was signed only through the end of this month, however.

I have been wondering what the deal was with Andretti.

Average finishes:

Jeff Green in the #1 car = 28.81
Jeff Green in the #30 car = 26.27

Steve Park in the #1 car = 26.54
Steve Park in the #30 car = 25.76

Although the change is minimal, this swap has certainly fared better for Park than for Green. Also, I find it interesting that both have fared better in the #30 car than the #1 car.

Both the #8 and #15 are heads above the #1 car.
Both the #29 and #31 are heads above the #30 car.

However, the #30 is a 2nd year team, while the #1 car is already an established team. The #30 car has shown signs of life as of late with Steve behind the wheel, the #1 car has yet to show that.

I hate to believe it but I believe that the #1 car isnt recieving the same stuff as the #8 and #15 cars.

Should be interesting to see how Andretti performs.

Top equipment, John had better impress or I think this will be the last we will see of him in the big league with a full time ride...

I haven't been a fan of John's for quite a while, but it should put to rest how much of the problem was the car and how much was John. I still hope though that he does good in the 1 car and it helps him get a good ride for next year.

I think we might see Scott Riggs maybe in a few races later on this season.

John did great in the DEI Chance 2 car at Indy! I think he might do pretty good in the #1 car. I hope the best for him! I watched him for 5 years at PE and still want to see him to well.

Interesting comparison. I've thought DEI had better equipment than RCR for the past 2 year, but Jeff ran much better in the #30 than the #1 this year, although tire and mechanical problems cause the huge difference to not be shown. Jeff poor runs in the #1 car have extremely disapointed me, and they may have a cost him a chance at ever having a decent ride again. Not trying to take the blame off Jeff, but does anyone else think Tony Gibson is not fit to be a crew chief? The #1 always falls off during the race and it seems Tony may not be knowledgable to get Jeff or Steve the proper changes.

I just dont get it either, the 1 was doing pretty good with Paul Andrews as Crew Chief. I think Bono Manion, the Chance 2 Crew Chief would be a good choice to crew chief the 1.

Theres nothing wrong with the 1 car, its Jeff Green. I was happy to see DEI isn't going to keep him around. He has never been and never will be Winston Cup material. Andretti will get things turned around.
