We're halfway to the Chase and a few things stand out to me on this season.

  • Tony Stewart's struggles. He's 16th in points and keeps losing spots. I don't know if they're trying some things to prepare for the Chase or if they're just off - or maybe both. He's not been the same since last year's Chase started. Maybe the team isn't as good as last year's first 26 races. Or maybe The Prelude needs to be over so he can concentrate better.
  • Mark Martin winless. No wins so far and hasn't really threatened to win. Part of me believes he ramped up his game so far last year that he really tore it up and couldn't maintain that pace for this year.
  • Matt Kenseth is in the hunt. I really don't know how because he seems to be uncompetitive. But there he is 3rd in points. It could be those covering the sport have totally overlooked him.
  • Jimmie Johnson's recent woes. I think DW hit the nail on the head when he said people like Gordon and others talking bad about his driving has gotten into his head some. Some of the mistakes he's making look like something David Ragan or Scott Speed would do. It will be interesting to see how much longer this continues.

I have to agree with all the above. I figured that Brian vickers and Montoya would not be contenders this year.

Kurt Busch is surprising me with very good runs this yesr

Biffle is in serious trouble of not making the chase. He was in 2nd pretty much the first 5 or 6 races and after that he seemed to fall apart. The other night he was way off the pace struggeling to make it even into the top 20, if things dont change soon he will be out of the chase.

Jamie Mac, story of the year. Last year he was headed for the dumpster.

Kahnes not suprising me as much as that disappoints me I didn't pick him to make it this year and definetly not after he announced he was leaving you can see since then he hasn't had it

The thing that suprises me about Kurt Busch is Penske is the only Dodge team out there. I thought that would hamper them. But it has not, so far.

Surprise
Jamie Mac
Kurt Busch
Denny Hamlin
Kevin Harvick
Jeff Burton

Disappointments
Dale Earnhardt Jr
Tony Stewart
Jimmy Johnson(at least the last two months)
Mark Martin
Carl Edwards

I agree with the above mentioned Jamie McMurray vote(s). It's good to see him do well IMO.

I'm also going to throw in a Jimmie Johnson as a surprise. I like seeing him have some normal luck that most all driver seem to experience. It's looooong overdue IMO. I've become accustomed to seeing any of his mistakes be turned around to a positive. It's nice to see things not go his way for a change. Don't mistake my view as being a Jimmie Johnson hater. It's an understatement to simply say that he a talented driver. I'm just growing tired of the Jimmie Johnson era.

This season hasn't gone the way I would have expected by any means. It is great to see Jamie Mac doing well. I think it is a needed breeze of fresh air for the sport. Hamlin and Kurt Busch running wel are suprises that I could have lived without to say the very least.

I am also shocked at the luck that Martin and Johnson are having. Martin not winning a race thus far is a bit shocking after the run he had last season. What is crazy is about Johnson is he has won three races this year and we are still talking about how bad he has been doing. I know that he has hit a slump right now, but we will probably all be able to add at the end of the season how surprised we are when he dominates the chase once again.
