2002 Pole Sitter: Jimmie Johnson
2002 Race Winner: Matt Kenseth
- Matt Kenseth continues to raid the NASCAR world, even though he saw some bad luck en route to a 14th place finish in the Southern 500; he extended his points lead over 2nd place man Dale Earnhardt Jr to over 380, the largest lead ever held since Dale Earnhardt's in the early 90's continues to grow. Matt Kenseth is the defending race winner of the Chevy Monte Carlo 400, he looks to capitalize on his huge point lead once again. Also make a note that he came back from a cut down tire to win this event in 2002. He finished 7th in this year's earlier Richmond race.
- Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with several championship contenders has seen a string of bad luck. He's finished some races 25th or worse in the second half. His championship hopes are continuing to sink, no one has ever come back from 380 points down this late in the season and no one probably will. He finished 27th in the Southern 500, however he did finish 4th in last year's Chevy 400 and won here at Richmond in 2000. Earnhardt finished 3rd in this years earlier Richmond race.
- Kevin Harvick, he's finished higher than Matt Kenseth the past 5 or 6 races and is currently the hottest driver in NASCAR besides Kenseth placing 5 or more second place finishes and a victory at the Brickyard 400. Harvick finished 2nd at the Southern 500 and for the past few races has had cars capable of winning. He has nowhere to go but up, he's going to put a lot of heat on Earnhardt Jr. for the runner up position in the championship fight. Harvick finished 2nd in the 2001 Chevy 400 but finished out of the top 10 in the following year. He finished 6th in this years earlier Richmond race.
- Jimmie Johnson was the 2002 Pole Sitter for the Chevy 400. With the bad luck some of the front championship runners are having, Johnson and a few others have enjoyed a steady rise to the top, he's currently 4th in points, 485 behind and fresh off a top 3 at the Southern 500. Johnson led a few laps last year in the Chevy 400, he could be a threat to win.
- Who's luck is astronomical? Matt Kenseth. Who's luck is just plain filthy? Jeff Gordon, believe or not, the 4-time champ ends August with only 1 top 5 finish and a string of 30th place finishes or worse. Gordon was involved in a multi car crash at the Southern 500 adding to his crash at Watkins Glen, the crash at Bristol and the not so good day at Michigan; that's one lousy August. Gordon is definitely out to lunch for the championship hunt, of course his hopes for a 5th title this year are virtually over but he hopes to bounce back from a difficult month. He led 42 laps in this year's earlier running of the Richmond race.
- Kurt Busch looks to gain some ground in the championship hunt. He finished 8th in this years earlier running of the Richmond race, he's currently 6th in the top 10 standings.
Drivers to watch this race:
Kevin Harvick - A great streak of top 2 finishes, Harvick could steal this one at Richmond. Highest finish at Richmond is a 2nd in 2001.
Matt Kenseth - Current Championship Point leader, a string of top 20s and top 10s, defending winner of the Chevy 400.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - Championship runner-up, didnt do that well in August. Last top 10 was at Bristol two weeks ago. Finished 4th last year at the Chevy 400.
Kurt Busch - finished 8th in this years earlier Richmond race.
Tony Stewart - Seen lots of success at Richmond. Entered the top 10 after Darlington, could be a threat to win.
Robby Gordon - Came from Four laps down earlier this year to finish 4th in the earlier Richmond race. If he can make up all that ground, imagine what he can do on the lead lap. Robby will be a definite threat to win.
