The Brickyard 400
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
August 3, 2003
NBC - 2:30pm/et

2002 Race Winner: Bill Elliott, 125.033mph, started 2nd
2002 Pole Sitter: Tony Stewart, 182.960mph, finished 12th.

We're past the halfway point of the season and we've entered the largest race of the second half of the season... The Brickyard 400. The best place to pass will be in the turns and gain an advantage just before they hit the straights, the best racing line will be as always, the lower line, unless we see the higher line open up. For the fans, dont be worried, all 3 main contenders for the championship have done well here in years past.

- Matt Kenseth's competition was nearly eliminated last week as Jeff Gordon and Bobby Labonte were "whacked" on the track at Pocono. The only drivers in the championship who werent whacked were Dale Jr. and Michael Waltrip. He finished 13th at Pocono, while in 2002, bad news for the competition, he finished 3rd at the Brickyard 400.

- Ryan Newman has been having a spectacular second half, with 2 wins the past 3 weeks, and 4 wins the entire season. He looks to be one of the hottest drivers heading into the second half and he crept into the top 10 in standings with that win at Pocono.

- Dale Earnhardt Jr regained second place from Jeff Gordon. Dale Jr finished third at Pocono which might signal another good finish at Indy (because both tracks handle the same). Earnhardt Jr finished in the top 10 in the 2001 Brickyard 400, he nearly won that event except for a mishap on pit road last year Earnhardt led 3 laps but finished out of the Top 20.

- Jeff Gordon's championship hopes nearly went out the window at Pocono after being booted into the wall thus relegating him to a 37th place finish. The 4 time champion comes to Indy a three time winner of the event, last year he finished 6th. He is more than 300 points away from the points lead, Indy could signal a turnaround.

- Kevin Harvick, 7th in the standings 534 points away from the lead, FINISHED 5TH IN LAST YEARS EVENT. Had to capitalize that. Harvick is hunting for his first win for the season, and what better for the Goodwrench car to enter victory lane at the Brickyard. Go Kevin !!!!!!!! :)

- Jimmie Johnson finished 9th in last years running of the Brickyard, he's 4th in the standings and winner of the Loudon race 2 weeks ago.

- Michael Waltrip couldnt have wished for better performance. He's doin good ! A Waltrip is in the top 10 standings, just -439 from the lead, and 9 points away from taking 4th in the standings. He looks to be one of the hottest drivers heading into the Brickyard

- Tony Stewart wants a win at Indy, be it in an Indy Car or a Stock Car. Last year he finished 12th en route to a bad situation with a cameraman to vent his frustration. Hopefully he can get his cool back after a blown engine at Pocono and head for a possible win at the Brickyard. Last weeks mishap at Pocono kicked him well out of the Top 10 in points.
