Sharpie 500
Bristol Motor Speedway
0.533-mile concrete oval, 500 laps, 266.5 miles
2002 Pole Winner: Jeff Gordon
2002 Race Winner: Jeff Gordon, 77.097mph, started 1st
- Matt Kenseth is one step closer to the championship, at Michigan, closest contenders for the championship Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon were involved in accidents and caught several laps down. Now it's just a race to see how many points Matt Kenseth can put on that insurmountable lead. Kenseth now holds one of the largest point leads in modern NASCAR history by 329 over Dale Earnhardt Jr. At Bristol, Matt Kenseth has seen lots of success this year finishing 2nd in the earlier race. Matt has had his worst finish of the season at Martinsville, that position was 22nd. Even more bad news for the competition, he finished 5th in last years Sharpie 500.
- Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost even more ground to point leader Matt Kenseth. He finished 32nd at Michigan, a track where he has done well in recent years. His hopes for the championship are sinking rapidly, he'll need a miracle to gain alot of points on the leader. He finished 18th in this years earlier Bristol race and had an outstanding 3rd place performance in last year's Sharpie 500.
- Jeff Gordon has been having a horrible summer, he's finished lower than 30th in the past few races and his championship hopes are almost down the drain. He won last year's race at Bristol, if he wants to win the championship, then he needs to mount a very large comeback.
- Kevin Harvick has shown that he's one of the most consistent and prolific race car drivers this year. After his win at the Brickyard 400, Kevin Harvick has been having a streak of strong top 5 finishes, now he comes to Bristol; a track where he has won at many times in the Busch Series and nearly won at in the Winston Cup Series. Harvick finished 4th in last year's Sharpie 500, and won this years earlier Busch race at Bristol. he has nowhere else to go but higher in the points standings. He finished 6th in this years Food City 500.
- Jimmie Johnson was taken out of last years race by Robby Gordon. However, he did finish 7th in this years Food City 500. With the troubles that Dale Earnhardt Jr and Jeff Gordon are having, Johnson will enjoy a nice ride up in the points standings.
- Kurt Busch won this years Food City 500. Though his face may not look pretty for Bristol, his car sure will, the 97 will bear a special paint scheme for the Sharpie 500. The recent incident may affect Busch both off the track and on the track, he has said that it will be somewhat difficult to breath while wearing the helmet.
- And yes, Jimmy Spencer is still suspended for the Sharpie 500.
Now, I decided to can the Top 10 and just make the section: guys to watch.
Drivers to watch this race:
17 Kenseth - Will this be another great points day for Kenseth, or will he try to win it himself ? Of course he will, he has a great shot to win this race.
29 Harvick - He may gain some more points on the top 3 in the standings. With his brilliant performances at Bristol both in Busch and Winston Cup, Harvick may get the win on Saturday night.
97 Busch - Has Busch recovered from the broken nose and will it affect his ability to breath in the car? A win would be a morale booster for the Rubbermaid/Sharpie team, especially since this is their sponsors race.
8 Earnhardt Jr. - How many points can he gain on Matt Kenseth, that is if he does. If luck comes his way, he may be gunning it for the win.
