The Championship race
-------------------------------------
With 5 races left to go in the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship fight, it's heating up between Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman, Newman finished second at Lowe's Motor Speedway and is threatening for the top runner-up spot, meanwhile Kevin Harvick is 267 points out of the lead, the closest anyone has been to Kenseth's lead since the New England 300 at Loudon earlier this year and him and Kenseth have had on-track tangles at Lowes Motor Speedway. The Championship scene comes to Martinsville Speedway where Matt Kenseth finished 22nd in the April race, will Kenseth falter or will he finish off the championship fight once and for all? The race for the win meanwhile has seen a new unlikely contender at the short tracks in Dale Earnhardt Jr., Earnhardt led the most laps in the April Race en route to a 3rd place finish after being trapped behind a lapped car, and Jeff Gordon got his only win of the season at Martinsville and Bobby Labonte had a strong top 5 finish in the April race. Who will win this one? It could come down to the wire.

The Top 3 championship contenders
-------------------------------------
- Matt Kenseth finished 22nd at Martinsville in the 2003 April Race and finished 19th in the 2002 October race. With 5 races to go and a 267 point lead, it seems Kenseth's championship is pretty secure, but will it be secure enough? All Kenseth needs to do maintain a 10th place finish in all of his races to clinch the championship, will he succeed or will he falter? Kenseth has run strong in other short track races placing top 5s at Bristol.

- Kevin Harvick finished 16th at Martinsville in the 2003 April Race and finished in the late 30s in the 2002 October race. He's facing a huge task to overwhelm the 267 point lead Matt Kenseth has, no one has ever done it from this far behind with 5 races left to go, but it's never over till it's over. Harvick has run pretty well at the short tracks this year, also placing top 5s at Bristol and nearly winning the 2001 Old Dominion 500 until a late race incident with Bobby Hamilton

- Ryan Newman didnt have a good finish in this year's earlier Martinsville race but he did take the pole in the 2002 October race. Newman is on top of everyone's power rankings as he almost won at Lowes Motor Speedway. Newman sits third in the championship fight with only 5 races left to go. Can Newman make it 9 wins this year?

Who will win this race?
-------------------------------------
- The obvious pick will be Dale Earnhardt Jr., he led the most laps in the April Race and was on the hunt for victory until a lapped car that blew a tire came between him and the trophy. No doubt, DEI has improved on their short track and flat track programs and this race will be a good race for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get the victory.

- Bobby Labonte, finished 2nd in the April race. Labonte has been holding pretty strong in the top 10 standings and had a great shot to win the race in April. The 18 team will certainly be ready for redemption come race day.

- Jeff Gordon, won the 2003 April Race, it's been his only victory so far in the year. Chances are high he could snag another.

- My darkhorse pick will be Johnny Benson, he finished 2nd in the 2002 Old Dominion 500 and with the news that he could be on the verge of being let go from MB2 Motorsports, then he'll probably be racing to convince anyone looking to hire him as a driver for 2004. Martinsville no doubt is a track that's known for not being kind to aggressive drivers, but if Benson could keep it out of trouble all day long, he could have a good finish and be possibly racing for the win.

BIG IF any of the youngsters get lucky, they certainly have the cars to get the job done BUT the bottom line on any short track is finish first to finish first and for that alone experience imo is more important than any other factor.

Running at the front at the end may be a youngin or two but look for the top 10 to be filled up with seasoned vets.
