Berrier fined, Harvick, Childress docked points
Punishment comes for Chicagoland infraction

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR officials announced Wednesday that Todd Berrier, crew chief of the No. 29 NASCAR Winston Cup Series team, has been fined $25,000 due to a rule infraction discovered last week at Chicagoland Speedway following the Tropicana 400.

In addition, NASCAR has penalized the team's driver, Kevin Harvick, 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship driver points and team owner Richard Childress 25 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship owner points.

During the event's pre-race inspection process, the rear suspension of the No. 29 Chevrolet was found to have an unapproved travel limiting device, a violation of Section 12-4-Q of the 2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rule Book (parts and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules) and Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing).

Is it me or if you have a car that violates the rule book before a race then that car should be pulled from the race and not start at all? What if this was a safety violation and another driver was hurt due to this kind of rule breaking? The article says pre-race inspection, and I know this particular item is not a safety concern, but why the selective rule enforcement?

I know, it seems weird that something would be found in the pre-race inspection and then nothing gets done about it at the time, penalties are just assessed afterwards.

Who knows?!?

I don't understand the questions.....

The violation was found in pre-race inspections, and rest assured that the violation was corrected before the car went to the starting grid,.

Penalties and fines, no matter when the violation is found, are nearly always announced on Tuesday or Wednesday.

You can bet that car was repaired to Nascar specs before it ever hit the track.

Too bad to see this happen. ( by the way, this is my first post on the quick reply! )

That could drop Harvick back down to 8th and move Tony up to 7th.

i dont agree with this....i do not agree with the fact that NASCAR can take points away from a team that may have broken a rule before a race starts....the problem was corrected before the race started so therefore the car was legal for the race......i can see fining....but i think its out of bounds to take points away from a team before the race even starts.

I don't necessarily agree with the pre-race points penalties, but the precedence has been set from last year, and NASCAR has been accused of not being consistent, so..........And it doesn't seem to phase some of these teams that keep "trying" and get burned!

that is a shame but like gollum said when you play you pay

.Unless your Earnhardt Jr   Just Kidding...
