Harvick, McMurray face penalties today
By JIM UTTER, The Charlotte Observer
Nextel Cup Series drivers Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray are expected to both receive penalties Wednesday for a post-race incident from Sunday's race at Talladega, Ala., the Observer has learned.

Harvick and McMurray apparently traded paint on the white flag lap on Sunday's race while the event remained under caution. Both are expected to receive at least hefty fines, sources said.

Harvick was credited with a sixth-place finish, while McMurray ended up fifth in the race won by Jeff Gordon.

An official announcement of NASCAR's penalties is expected sometime later today.

Anyone go the skinny on this?? I never saw anything during the race and did not realize there was an incident.

this from Nascar.com...

NASCAR announced on Wednesday that Kevin Harvick and Jamie McMurray have been fined $25,000 each and placed on probation until Oct. 3, 2007 for being involved in an altercation with each other's cars during this past Sunday's Nextel Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

The altercation occurred during the final caution period that came on the white-flag lap.

Both drivers were found to be in violation of Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock-car racing -- involved in an altercation with another competitor's car during a caution period) of the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series rule book.

Just checked out Rousch chat forums and they are as baffeld as us.

The 29 "bumped" the 26 in the right rear quarter panel under caution just after the wreck. Nothing major, just a tap- while saying the 26 wrecked the 20. The 26 then went NUTS and drove the 29 up the track trying to wreck him, stopped in front of him, or slowed to a near stop, and when the 29 went forward the spun the 26 around. THEN the 26 was trying to catch up to him to hit him more. After the initial contact all the 29 did was try and get away from the 26.
Clearly the 26 over reacted. BUT the 29 should not have gotten involved in the first place, that is what Berrier was screaming over the radio. Good thing they did not fine for laungage because the F bomb was dropped by Berrier. The HOTPASS guys had no clue what was going on but the cameras followed the car and kept the scanner on until the car was parked. It was pretty wild.

The bad thing is the 29 is on probation until into the chase, so he has to be extra careful. I was hoping with all the cans and commotion that NASCAR would let it slide....

That being said. McMurray is nothing short of an idiot. He was running out of gas and causing wrecks. If not for him the race would have finished under green and the 29 would have went around him and the 40 and easily scored a top 5 or MORE.

Interesting!!! Sounds like Harvick was taking absolution for Tony. Ironically, Jamie was not directly at fault that time

I WONDER

What the guys in the booth were looking at? And why we (the general viewers) didn't get some info on this.
Betsy:rolleyes:

Harvick, McMurray fined, placed on probation

If a recent trend continues, a large portion of drivers in the Nextel Cup garage will be on probation by the time the Pepsi 400 rolls around in July.

NASCAR announced Wednesday that Jamie McMurray and Kevin Harvick have been fined $25,000 and placed on probation until Oct. 3 for an incident that occurred under the final caution of Sunday's Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The sanctioning body penalized the two drivers for what appeared to be intentional and unnecessary contact between the two cars after the caution froze the field on the white-flag lap of a green-white-checkered finish.

"This particular incident was brought to our attention after the race, when we were reviewing the finishing order," NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said. "If you recall, we had to go back and look at the videotape and the scoring loops to determine the finishing order after the race ended under caution.

"It was brought to our attention then, and we reviewed the video again on Tuesday, as we normally do. We had discussions as a group and agreed that it warranted a penalty."

McMurray, through a spokesperson, declined to talk about the incident until his scheduled stand-up session with the media Friday at Richmond International Raceway. Harvick could not be reached for comment.

Harvick likewise will be available Friday, but his public relations representative, Stacie Fandel, said both drivers were surprised by the severity of NASCAR's penalty. Fandel said McMurray's car, which was low on fuel, apparently sputtered on the final restart, causing contact with Harvick and Tony Stewart.

Unaware that McMurray was out of gas, Harvick reportedly retaliated by leaving a tire mark on McMurray's car as the incident escalated.

Stewart and Juan Montoya already are on probation until Dec. 31 for earlier incidents. Though Montoya incurred his penalty for an "inappropriate gesture" during Busch Series practice at Phoenix, he can violate his probation through detrimental conduct in any of NASCAR's series.
