of a ghost in the system? computer was down the past week.Cox Cable said that there was a ghost in the system that made it crash.problem was on their end.i thought i heard it all but this is a new one.is this true?

that's technical mumbo jumbo that means they don't have a clue what's wrong wiith it but we'll be see you back again shortly fourisis. if you post all that you can of your computer specs, including software, chances are you'll get a lot more help here than their nonsensical diagnoses. :)

edit: just read this again where cox said the problem was on their end. if something on *their end* harmed your computer then write them and demand restitution. if you've just been without service most *reputable* ISP's will deduct your bill prorated by the number of days out of service. they will not do this automatically. you have to ask to have them do it.

Contrary to common belief, the Ghost in the Machine is a real thing. Y'see, with most amature programming, they don't clean up well after themselves. when a program runs in a section of memory they take the answer provided, but leave the program in the memory. It doesn't blank itself. Then when they go to reuse that bit of memory, if they don't initialize (blank) it first, they wind up over-writing what's there. The problem comes when the over-write is smaller than the initial program and leaves a tag-end. Sometimes, because of the way programs are, that tag end can append perfectly to the over-write and run without crashing. The result from that run, however, is anything but what it's supposed to be. That tag end is "The Ghost in the Machine".
