I’ll admit, I’ve been one in the past who has been a defender of Kurt Busch as a misunderstood soul in the world of Nextel Cup racing.
There’s little denying Busch is one of the more roundly disliked drivers in the series, much of that stemming from the brash and ****y attitude that he showed so much in his early days in the Nextel Cup Series.
Listen, I’ll still say that I believe Kurt Busch is one of the top-5 pure drivers in the Nextel Cup Series. But I’m beginning to wonder if the boy isn’t truly a little messed up in the head.
During a conference call this week Busch talked about how enjoy running races at New Hampshire International Speedway. Busch swept both events at the track in 2004 on the way to the Nextel Cup championship.
Busch also talked about how fans have “embraced” him at New Hampshire. Now that one, that definitely got a chuckle out of me, even more especially because Busch employed some of the old Ricky Henderson third person action in talking about how fans in New England like him.
“The fans really embraced Kurt Busch up in that area,” Busch said. “So I'm like a second child, I guess, to Ricky Craven in that area.”
I’m sorry to break this to you Kurt, but I don’t think embraced is really the term to be using. I’ll count on this, Sunday, when driver introductions take place, Busch will most definitely be in the top-3 when it comes to drivers getting booed.
I think a great experiment to truly see how fans at NHIS have embraced Busch would be to take him out to the X-lots, good old Frontier Land, long about 10 or 11 on Saturday night and see how he’s embraced. That would definitely be entertainment.
