RCR back to a four car team?

Frontstretch’s Matt Taliaferro is reporting he’s learned Paul Menard has agreed in principle to move to Richard Childress Racing for 2011. Sponsorship would continue to come from his father’s company, Menards, with a car number and crew chief to be announced. No word on an official announcement yet from either side, but the team would expand to four cars while retaining their current driver lineup of Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick, and Clint Bowyer.

Menard is having a career year in Cup this season, with one top-5 and three top-10 finishes in 21 starts. 23rd in the Cup Series standings, he briefly flirted inside the top 12 this Spring in his first year driving for the newly-merged Richard Petty Motorsports. RPM had been trying to retain him for 2011, but now has just A.J. Allmendinger returning amongst their current four-driver fleet next season.

For RCR, their expansion back to four cars comes just one year after contracting to three, shutting down the No. 07 driven by Casey Mears in February. However, doing more with less seemed to revitalize the program, which is having one of its best years in the series since Dale Earnhardt’s death in 2001. After going 0-for-4 in Chase berths in ’09, they could go 3-for-3 in ’10 with Harvick, Burton, and Bowyer all inside the top 12 with five races left in the regular season.

RCR loves guys with built in sponsorship no matter their actual talent level.

??????????? How many self-sponsored drivers with little talent has RCR hired?Townley is about all that I can think of.Not really enough to call it a love affair.

Going to four cars. It didn't work the first time.

I don't know, it could be a different story this time around. Why does RCR wants 4 anyway? It's not like it's doing great over at Roush or Hendrick, there is always one guy who is the flunky.

Paul Menard is the Buckshot Jones of the 2000's. Jones had sponsors following him around and that got him plenty of rides before the sponsors got smart and left. In Mendard's case, his sponsor is his daddy and looks to be more secure.

The King and the guy who sweeps the floors,,,,,,,,:)

I think that guy is Allmendinger.

UPDATE: Richard Petty Motorsports announced that driver AJ Allmendinger has signed a multiyear contract extension with the organization. Allmendinger will remain behind the wheel of the #43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford in the Sprint Cup Series. “I am really excited about my future here with Richard Petty Motorsports,” said Allmendinger. “It’s been such an honor to be behind the wheel of The King’s #43 car. I am happy to be able to continue to be his driver and feel for the first time in my NASCAR career I have the chance to build on something. Everyone at RPM and Ford Racing has worked hard to be successful this year and I know we’re right on the verge of big things.”
