Health Insurance Companies SUCK!

My wife and I have decided to try to have a baby. We've been married for 4 years and never have used protection, but hadnt really tried to get pregnant til Feb of this year. My sister just had a baby about 2 weeks ago and now my wife is really getting antsey about getting pregnant. When we first decided to try; We agreed to wait 9 months to a year; till we go to the doctor to have tests run. Basically just try to let nature take its course before we go any further. Well like I said; my wife reeeeeaaaallly wants one now that my sister has one. So we made an appointment to see our family physician to talk to her about taking the next step.
At the appointment the doctor put her on different medicine, and gave her some kind of vitamin to start with. We asked if she could refer us to any OB-GYN or would we have to see a fertility specialist since I am disabled (Muscular Dystrophy), and may need different tests done. We knew that mosts insurances dont cover fertilization, but we were unsure, since they may have to run tests on me that it maybe coded different. The doctor said that she would call the insurance company to find out if it will be covered, and said she will call us back with the info on Tuesday (yesterday).
She called my wife back yesterday at work, and told her the insurance company wont cover anything to do with fertility, since it isnt necessary to have a baby to live your life. My wife was devistated. She said the doctor told her they will cover birth control, but not fertility. I just thought that is very unfair; they'll cover prevention of life, but they wont cover conception...What BUNCH OF LIBERAL BULLSCHIT!!!!!!
We got thinking later on about the reason why they dont cover fertility or any other help of conception; because its one less person they have to worry about covering, and since it isnt a necessity in life to give birth...WHY COVER IT?....A$$HOLES!!!!

I feel ya bro.

My wife and I tried for several years to have a baby. We got pregnant a few times but she miscarried. We started to doubt if she would be able to carry a baby to full term.

That was three kids ago. I really hope it works out for the two of you.

Would your wife, or you for that matter, consider adoption?

Believe it or not, we have talked about adoption recently as she had the unreversable surgery after our youngest was born 7 years ago. We are pretty strongly pro-life and like the idea of "putting our money where our mouth is" so to speak.

Nitro, I lost 2 children thru miscarriage before giving birth to my 2 wonderful 30+ in age children, and was terrified that I wouldn't be able to have any of my own.

I have heard many times that if you adopt, then you relax enough to make a baby together.

Best wishes, and keep relaxed and loving your wife!

Thanks for the up's! Yeah, we have concidered adoption, but that takes a lot of money. Its also alot harder now days to find a baby; since that what most people want when they adopt. I myself would rather go without a baby; than adopt. Just because I know that the baby isnt biologically mine, and I always thought it would be cool that I helped make that baby; that way it has some of my traits and some of his/her mothers traits.

Nitro - Feel for you bro; Been there...my wife and I went as far as some fertility injections to no avail, felt we where on an emotional roller coaster each month and it was getting harder to do it each month of waiting...called it quits and decided to adopt; we traveled to China in November and are the proud parents of a beautiful girl, Olivia, who is now 18 months old and doing very well, we feel that she was meant to be.

Check your insurance coverages yourself and with the state dept. of insurance, we live in Pennslyvania and are not covered, but across the river in New Jersey they are covered for some parts of the fertility treatments. Good Luck!

Nitro, have you looked into any community resources? There are clinics in some areas that are low cost. Some doctors will even work out payment plans. These resources differ from state to state, but it would be worth while checking with your state department of health and human services.

My best to you and Mrs. Nitro.....remember, we're here for you.

No we haven't; we are basically just getting started, and thought it would be good learn the process of the fertility status on insurance; just to be on the safe side if one of us or both us have a problem. Like I told my wifes friend; we've been unprotected for 4 years and not even an accident has happend, so their has to be a problem with one of us. I mean we started getting serious about this in Feb and have been on time with ovulation almost each time, and still nothing. Thats why I say there is something wrong...What do you think?

Without having a medical history, it's hard to say. From a medical standpoint, the least expensive way to start is for you to see a urologist. This doctor specializes in the male reproductive system. Many of the tests he does can be done in the office. Insurance should cover this just like a regular office visit.
This subject can get very complex and most people are more comfortable discussing it privately.

I am a nurse with 30 years experience in the operating room. A lot of that time was spent as a urology nurse. If I can help in any way, please feel free to PM me.

Thats a catch 22 type thing. In order for me to see a urologist I have to have a referral from my family physician. Also it has to be a major problem for the urologist to see me, and the insurance wont pay for what he as to do; its considered fertility work.

Principle, but my wifes company(Iowa Health System) is self insured. They got to pick and choose what the insurance covered, so in a way its more their fault than the insurances, but Principle gave them the option. IN a way its a 50/50 thing.

Just relax and stop trying so hard, please. Enjoy your life together and if it's meant to be it will happen. Take it easy on yourself and live life to it's fullest.
