Heat Races instead of qualifying?

LMS's promoter Humpy Wheeler says he's considering heat races instead of traditional best-of-two laps qualifying sessions for setting the field for future Cup races in Charlotte. "That's the way to put 75,000 people in the grandstands," Wheeler said. "And there's no reason we can't do heat races." And he says that it's time for Charlotte and other cities to put up financial bids for NASCAR's annual all-star race. Wheeler is also looking at ways to provide more punch to the all-star weekend. "The NBA has that slam-dunk contest. Well, let's take these guys over to the dirt track and say 'OK guys....'"Why not? Some of these guys have never raced dirt, but I'm sure they'd like to try it. Imagine what that would be like."(Winston Salem Journal)(5-29-2004)

Folks,

Look where this rumor came from. Winston-Salem Journal.
Mike Mulhern.
Need I elaborate on this any further?

As a matter of fact, DE W2, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Sure it would help control expensives............for a while!! But then expenses would rise again with "heat" competition. This is the top of the professional stock car racing aspect of the sport.......no matter what you do, it will be expensive!! Besides, this ain't Saturday night at the local dirt track! You want that, go to the local dirt track...........then tune in on Sunday (most weekends) and watch NASCAR Cup racing. :D

The heats would tear these cars up.. big time.. they should make it race day heat qualifying.. wouldn't that be interesting?

Interesting.............yes!! Expensive..............yes!! Practical..........no!! :)

**have not read any of the post yet but**

How about expand the filed by 1 or 2 spots?

Take the cars that DNQed and let them have about a 10 lap shoot out and the winner or top 2 move on to the next race.

Alright. I have a question. We all love racing. There are, perhaps, a dozen different styles of racing.......and many are fans of more than one style (and I would say some are fans of them all). NASCAR's top series have their style...........it's different than the others. Why is it that people want Cup, Busch, and the CTS to be just like some other style? Heat races for starting positions in the "Main Event" is not what the Cup, Busch, and CTS races rely on for starting positions!! Instead its qualifying laps (like the IRL, CART and F!.......only they call 'em time trials). Why would you want it to change? You either like the racing as it is or you don't..........take it for what it is or go watch what you want.

Talk about changes...........geeze.

i actually think that's a good idea ... don't know if i'd want to see it

Things are fine just the way they are. Once they started tinkering around this series they just don't know when to stop!

I just thought of a few lap race for the DNQ cars after seening like 9 go home.

and i dont like prov. eather get in on time or go home.....but now Dale Jr. Jeff Gordon, Johnson, or any ford cant do that, well i say thats what they should do 43 cars, time only you blow up or crash, to bad.

I'd have to agree with boB on this one......this is probably just a nasty rumor spread by that Mulhern guy again. I'd also like to see it stay the way it is, heats are for saturday night local short tracks! :D

LOL! I was being sarcastic!...sorry, should have been a little more clear there. There would be an instant jump in team expenses. Imagine the carnage during the heat races and the extra work for the fab shop and power train guys....thinking about the one engine rule too now. Could you imagine the implications?

Think too, of the events that rely on heat races. Very exciting short sprints, with a kinda sorta longer event in the "A main".

I'll take this part of nascar the way it is.

Thank you i will watch what I want, and if NASCAR is on when I'm home, I'll watch them too, because the last 25% of the Cup races are pretty exciting.

Why Doese NASCAR need to change its format? With the exception of F1, I do not see any other series drawing 100,000 plus fans nearly every week.

I like the idea of same day qualifying and racing. I think it would make the race much more interesting.

Would like to see qualifying pretty much kept the way it is except maybe have them start the car the same as they qualified. Too much time and money spent on special qualifying setups that don't really relate to how the car will actually race. Instead of provisionals have the slowest 10 have a 10 lap race and take the top finishers to get the 43 starters needed.
