Hello, new to this board. I am a FireFighter from Illinois (hope you wont hold the Ill. thing against me!) and I love Racing!!

Welcome aboard flametamer! Pull up a keyboard and post away and in no time you will shed that punk rookie status! Most everyone here doesn't bite, or at least not hard anyway! Glad to have you as part of the "family" :)

well hello fellow illinoisian, what part you come from? and you have come to the right place :)

Hello from a hopefully soon to be firefighter. How long have you been a firefighter?

Nate, were almost nieghbors! I know some folks from Canton, and spend some time at the spoon river speedway.

66, I've been a FireFighter for 21 years, the last 12 as a paid FireFighter, and the past 5 as the Union President (no, I am not sane!). where are you trying to get on the job?

Glad to have ya here... sucks ya missed all the offseason fighting...lol, but all that matters is your here for Daytona..
Enjoy it here brah!!

BTW, who's ya driver?

Hey Bud, I have reciently become a JR. fan,(long, long, story!) and I have always been partial to Kenny Schraeder. Mostly, I just Like the racin!!

Well, I'm trying to get hired on with the Kern County Fire Department here is California. I'll be 18 years old on the 22nd of this month and they are testing in a week to hire 9 guys! Man that really stinks doesn't it?

66, you must be really disapointed. have you checked the age regulations to see if there is a provision that would allow you to test before turning 18 and not be hired until after you birthday?

Guys, if i don't answer in a timely fashion please don't take it wrong, sometimes i do this at the Firehouse.

Yeah, I need to be 18 to take the tests. Kind of ticked about that too. Alot of the firefighters are retiring in the next few years so I'll get my chance. Plus maybe I can grow a little more. (I'm kinda short)

Well, your young and you will get there! just don't give up. remember, if your in this business long enough you'll get all of it you want. and you will have along way to go to get that pension from your age!! ( and don't worry about the short thing, every size has it's place in the Firehouse!)

Thanks, its been nice talking with you. I need to go do some studying so I'm out of here for tonight. Seeya.

Welcome, Flametamer. Always happy to have a new poster.

Pull up a chair, grab a drink from the keg, and visit a spell.

Make sure your five-point harness is tight 'cause racin' is about to start!

Hello welcome to the boards!!

Thats awsome! Its possible we have crossed paths down there and not have know it, haha. I live in Trivoli(probally haven't heard of that) went to school in Farmington(have probally heard of that), and do some goose hunting by canton. I goto spoon river a couple times a year. See ya there! :)

Welcome Flametamer!

Sounds like you have almost as much time on the job as I had.

I retired the last day in 1999 with the Volunteer fire, resuce and EMS service after 23 1/2 years total in two states (Md. and N.C.)

Had a chance to do a lot of different jobs over that period of time. Training officer, assistant chief, state instructor, part time assistant fire marshal........ lots of paid and unpaid time that was always an adventure. And I had a regular full time job during that time period.

I wish you well with your career. There is none other like it.

I'm sure that you have heard the expression that we must be crazy..... we are the only fools that run into burning buildings while all of the sane folks are running away from it. :D

Hey 66!

Don't let it get to you. You have an advantage in that you are still young. If you are with a vol. dept., get as much training a possible. Work your way through as many cerifications that are possible.

I taught many volunteers over the years and had a chance to see many of them go on to paid positions with Charlotte and Monroe Fire Departments here in N.C.

I can tell you right now that their training helped them in getting on the job and their basic fire academy training went much easier because they already had many of the skills. It may take 1 to 5 years before you get that paid position.

If you really want to do the job, just don't give up. Make friends in that paid department........ hang around some of the stations.......... talk to the career people. Getting to know them can help you and if you find one that is willing to spend time with you and talk, it will only add to your knowledge.

Good Luck,

Guido

Nate, I have heard of trivoli, and used to take the farmington exit to Peoria Speedway. I'll let you know when I come to the river this year!

Guido, thats good advice you gave to 66. any certs. you can have before a test help alot. are you anywhere near King N.C.? the Fire Chief who just left there came from the Dept. I work for.

No sir.

I believe King is up around Winston-Salem area in the north central part of the state. I'm located in the south central part of the state near Lowes Motor Speedway.
