9 Is Fine

I'm going to my very first race this week at Darlington! I can't wait. I'll be going with my hubby and his best friend. They've been to other races but this will be everyone's first time at Darlington.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has any info on the track or the area they would share. We're going out Thursday afternoon so we'll be there for the whole weekend. We're staying in Hartsville and our seats are in Tyler Tower. If anyone knows of good places to eat, any clubs to go to, or anything we should know about the track, would be great. I'm also thinking of renting a scanner if anyone could tell me how much or where to get them at the track.

Basically, any and all info would be appreciated! :D

I don't know where your seats are, but if they are under the covered grandstand (if that is even still there), BRING EARPLUGS!!!! Bring some anyway, it can't hurt. Buy them at the track and you'll pay about 400%. Walgreen's is your best bet.

And I am so jealous right now I could scream.

Renting a scanner is a breeze. Just do it early Friday. The scanner trailers usually are mixed in with souvenir trailers, so just find one and sign up. The last I rented was $50 for the whole weekend --- with two headsets. Be sure to use a credit card --- it's easier to leave the deposit, etc.

Be sure to go through the museum. It's one the other side of the track from the start/finish line.

On race morning, find one of the hot cinnamon buns. They are huge and wonderful. LOL

Tyler Tower is a great place to have seats --- you can see everything that happens. Take plenty of sunscreen and wear a hat!

Get a scanner if at all possible, Take a cushion for your seat, sunglasses are wonderful on a sunny day, binoculars are recommended. (if you don't get a scanner at least get a cheapie radio and headset, there's a lot of info you won't get otherwise)

I always take a stopwatch.

Have not been since they reconfigured the track, back then my favorite seats were in the Brasington Grandstand which was just after turn 4.

Not only check out the museum but the NMPA Hall of Fame as well.

But the most important thing of all...Have Fun!!!:D

I must agree with the other two post- Rent a scanner. It brings the race to a whole new level!! We have rented from TrackScan in the past and have received quality stuff.
Don't forget to take sunscreen for your lips too. :lips

Took a sunscreen to the races one time, but every time I held it up the folks behind me kept yelling at me!!:D

One note on the scanner, be sure to get a frequency guide with it. And program in the NASCAR and broadcast channels as well as the drivers ya want to hear. you'll hear a lot of stuff there that you will never hear anywhere else, promise!

HardScrabble is right. A scanner is a must to have the "complete" race. I had mine at the Texas race this year when Shawna got into Jr. The comments made by Jr. were hilarious. It was a once in a lifetime experience to hear just what the drivers say when they are on the track. You definitely don't hear that on the radio or on the TV.:)

Thank you so much everyone! I'll definitely get a scanner if I can. We'll be at the track early Friday so hopefully we won't have any trouble. I'll be listening to Bill, of course, but I heard he doesn't say a whole heck of a lot. I also heard that Ward and Jr were pretty entertaining. Is there anyone else I should not miss out on listening too? :D

From what I hear, there's more to hear on the youger guys' frequencies. Jeff Burton was on his non-stop at Bristol according to a friend who was at the track. Then again, you'll be able to tell who might be having a more animated conversation than the others without too much trouble.

Tony makes for some good listening! As does Rusty. But hands down, Jr. is the best to listen to.
You can get scanners that hold 100 channels, which is nice that way the driver # and the channel # are the same. Last year we rented a 50 channel scanner, so we got all the drivers but it was confusing to have to look at a list to see which driver you were listening to. ( we could id the drivers by voice but not crew cheif or members) Something to keep in mind.

I know who 9 is fine is gonna listen too, BILL ELLIOTT! As for Darlington, which I have never been too, Have a great Time and keep an eye out for ol Bill. He'll be there and hopefully a nice big win!

ksurocks...That's a great idea on the 100 channel scanner so you can have the drivers number correspond with the scanner channel number. I never would have thought of that. Thanks! :D

And, remember that you can just set the scanner to "SCAN". Then you can listen to whom ever is talking at the time. It can get confusing when one of the drivers has a more powerful radio than another, though. You can be listening to one conversation and another one takes over before the first one is finished. It is a BLAST:jumping: just listening!!!!
Have a great time!
