CONCORD, N.C. - NASCAR has kept the Richmond winning car of Jimmie Johnson an extra day at the NASCAR Research and Development Center - but only because the Hendrick Motorsports team allowed it to keep the car. :D
NASCAR has taken two cars to the R&D center after each car of tomorrow event, and it took the cars of Johnson and Richard Childress Racing's Clint Bowyer following the Sunday race at Richmond International Raceway.

Bowyer's team already has gotten its car back, and Johnson's team likely will get its car back Wednesday, said NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp on Tuesday night. Johnson's team indicated it didn't need the car for Darlington and told NASCAR it could take a day to comb through it.

With the inspection templates so precise with the car of tomorrow, NASCAR wants to see what pieces bend and change to see if it needs to adjust any of its postrace inspections.

"We are going over it as we improve and work on our postrace inspection process, it gives us an opportunity to expand the scope of our inspection process - there's absolutely no issues with the [Johnson] car whatsoever," Tharp said. "They said we could keep it an extra day, and we appreciated it. It is a good example of the teams working with us to help us move the car of tomorrow process further along.

"The bottom line is they weren't going to use it at Darlington. They didn't have any urgency to get it back."

When did Nascar start asking permission??
