SONOMA, Calif. -- Car owner Rick Hendrick has let it be known to officials at Dale Earnhardt Inc. that he'd like to purchase the No. 8 for Dale Earnhardt Jr. when he begins driving for his organization in 2008.
"I'm not sure what their position is or what they want for it," Hendrick said Saturday between practices at Infineon Raceway.

Earnhardt said last week he would like to stay in the No. 8 if a deal can be reached with DEI owner Teresa Earnhardt, who has the rights to the number and his long-time sponsor, Budweiser.

Max Siegel, the president of global operations at DEI, said he will not act until there is a formal proposal.

Hendrick doesn't expect any sort of announcement for at least a few weeks.

"Honestly, we're leaving everything open," he said. "It's just so early. If you say you're going to do something and you really think you are, six weeks from now we might change our mind again.

"We're working through our sponsors and everything."

Ultimatley it is up to NASCAR because numbers cannot be bought or sold. The teams do not "own" their numbers, they are issued. They must apply every year for their number and are usually approved if they reapply. Now a deal could be reached if they "swapped" numbers, but it is up to sanctioning body on the approval of the swap.

If DEI gives up the 8 what do you really think the odds are that Nascar won't assign the 8 to HMS if they ask for it? The fact that HMS may pay DEI is a side matter that Nascar won't get involved with.
Afterall we are talking Lil'E and Hendrick here.

On a side note, does anyone else find it strange that Alan Miller was the agent that Kyle fired for not informing him of the deal he was trying to work out with HMS. The same Alan Miller that was working on the Lil'E/DEI deal. Could there have been collusion?

Not going to happen ..Nascar owns the number and leases it DEI, they will not give it to HMS>>> it is on thatsracin.com

But if DEI decides not to renew the lease next year and HMS then applies for the number you really think Nascar will say no and either keep the number or give it to another team. Really??

For the right deal, trust me, DEI will give up the number and their blessing to NASCAR to permit issuance of NASCAR to give the # 8 to Hendrick.

Inall the years with this sport, I have never known NASCAR to reject the transfer of a number from one owner to another when both parties are willing participants.

My prediction is, if HMS and DEI make a deal for the # 8, NASCAR will not stand in the way.

Yeah, I agree. however, the price may be too high.

But that is a different scenario. People were claiming that Nascar would not do it. No how. No way. Never.
Will DEI not renew? Who knows.
Will their "asking" price be too high? Again, who knows.
If DEI releases the number and HMS requests the number will Nascar let HMS have the number. You bet'cha. And that you can take to the bank.

I agree with Whizzer. I don't recall NASCAR standing in the way of a number transfer. It will come down to whether they can come up with a price. If both parties can come to an agreement, then Junior will still be in the #8. If not, I guess he'll be in the #5 and another driver will be in the #8 for DEI.

remember when the #8 belonged to the stavola bros.? When jr. came on the scene Sr. got the stavola bros. to release the # for jr. and there was money invovled but can't remember how much it was.

You are correct I remember that. I don't remember the amount either but it was lots.

That # belonged to Jrs' grandad so i don't see DEI giving up unless they get a lot of cash or a sponsor in return for the number.

Ralph Earnhardt never drove the #8 in a nascar race. Just at the local dirt tracks. I was told that too but found it was wrong. Dale Sr did win the first race for HMS (a busch race) in the #8.

Here is the history of the #8 from 1949 thru present.

Yeh i know he drove it locally, but my point is it has a lot of sentimental value for the Earnhardt legacy thing that Theresa is promoting. Maybe she will give it up without much of a fight, but i doubt it.

My dad ran a certain number, it's my dad's number no matter what. It doesn't matter if it was dirt or asphalt. It's family. :)

UPDATE: Hendrick Motorsports wants to buy the #8 so that Dale Earnhardt Jr. can race it next season. But it's not for sale, according to a report in the Charlotte Observer. The story quoted NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston, who said NASCAR owns and issues the numbers and that teams can't sell them. He said a team can allow another to use the number for a year as long as NASCAR approves. The report said Dale Earnhardt Inc., which uses the number, was aware of NASCAR's policy on selling numbers. Hendrick Motorsports officials weren't available for comment.(Dallas Morning News)(6-26-2007)

The thing is, without Dale the number 8 is worthless.

Who will care about the 8 if a rookie drives it? If DEI wants more than about 5 bucks for it, they better deal before the end of the season. No one will pay squat for it next year.

Apparently, it's "Priceless" because it's not for sale.

C'mon, selling numbers isn't anything new here even if NASCAR says that it won't happen. Evernham paid Melling a tidy sum to release the number 9 when Elliott was signed to drive for Ray. As has been said, it all boils down to the asking price.

You are absolutely correct. Why would nascar stand in the way if an agreement can be made between teams.

as was said, if bud goes with junior (which, while highly unlikely, is still possible), no question they'll cough up an easy 5 or 10 grand in half a heartbeat for it.

UPDATE 2:There is nothing keeping Hendrick Motorsports from buying the #8 from Dale Earnhardt Inc. as long as NASCAR approves the transfer of the number. While NASCAR owns all numbers and issues them to organizations on an annual basis, teams sell numbers all the time. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said it is unlikely the governing body would prevent such a transfer, adding the financial terms are not a concern.(ESPN.com)(7-2-2007)

Has Teresa said anything about selling the number 8? Is everyone assuming because Hendrick wants it, they'll get it. :D

I don't know but I think Teresa has hired Kelloggs as her attorney.
