The local teachers association presented a laundry list of solutions to the school board last week to fix the teacher shortage problem in Charles County.

The list includes providing scholarships for college students, increasing teacher salaries, offering child care for teachers’ children, providing affordable housing (isn't that an oxymoron? Last I checked, James Richmond doesn't set the housing prices  -Andy), cutting down teachers’ workloads (WTF?!?! -Andy) and paying the full tuition for teachers to get their master’s degrees.

‘‘Money matters. If we could offer a starting salary of $60,000 to beginning teachers and a quick climb to $100,000 for veteran teachers with advanced degrees:eek:, we wouldn’t have a teacher shortage here,” Bill Fisher, president of the Education Association of Charles County, told the school board March 11.

$100,000? :XXROFL:

Are they talking about Charles County, Maryland? The higher-ups don't even make that much.

My husband and I are both public school teachers. I've worked in the county 9 years, my husband 5. Together we make maybe $73,000 a year. We both tutor-me 5 days week, him 3 and he works part ime at a local flight school (he has his private pilot's license). Although I doubt they will, I hope your teachers get everything they want.

now i needed that. I just done emptying my bladder on my own accord after i about busted it in laughter at church, and it's a good thing i did :!

Sorry guys, but this is just what public education needs... too many decent teachers are leaving (or never entering) for other jobs because 30g is NOT worth the hassle. Therefore you get a LOT of sub-par teachers, which leads to poor education, which is leading more and more parents to look to private and homeschooling options...

Make the market competitive. Make the job worth your time. You'll get 20 decent applicants for a high paying job and 0 if the salary is too low.

I'm all for teachers getting more. 60 even sounds a bit low if you're good at what you do.

If they pull that off, they'll have one of the top education systems in the country in less than five years.

I tell you one thing. The salary would have to be pretty good to put up with some of the crap teachers have to put up with today. When I was in school they had a paddle and knew how to use it. Today teachers aren't allowed to discipline the kids.

I did my 30 and got the hell out of Dodge. I signed on to be an "educator". Today, the job is not education --- it is "how to pass the TEST."

Teachers have no rights at all. Students are the power. All it takes is 1 PO'ed student to accuse a teacher of something and your reputation is shot.

TRL, I agree with you. I also think that if we could get back to educating children, leaving the politics out of the schools, teachers should be paid for how well they do. Those that are good should command at least 100k. Those that aren't, if they can at least hold down the classroom, should get at a minimum 50k, but they should be put on notice that they need to do better. However, as long as the students are in charge, none of that will ever happen. Good teachers these days don't have a chance to show how great they can be. And to think that I once wanted to be a teacher.
