The Browns officially announced this evening that Kelly Holcomb has beaten out Tim Couch as the starting QB. Holcomb is obviously the better passer and seems to know Bruce Arians system better than Couch. Holcomb was with Arians when he was the Offensive coordinator at Indianapolis where he backed up Peyton Manning.
I was at least mildly surprised that Holcomb won even though he has certainly outplayed Couch since the open battle was announced. I really thought they would do the safe thing and say Tim won the job and have Kelly as a very good back-up. Couch will make well over $6 million this year and Kelly will make around 5% of that figure. Couch was the first player taken by the "new Browns" in the NFL Draft. I think it says a lot about the organization that they were willing to admit that Couch isn't everything they thought he would be when they used the first pick in the draft on him and paid him around $50 million over several seasons.
Kelly is abviously the fan favorite and Tim Couch really hurt himself with the fans when he cried and threw a fit after a game last year when the Browns home fans booed him when he went down with a concussion against Baltimore. It has been rumored that the players really wanted Holcomb to start also, as they have more faith in him than they do in Couch.
That being said, I trust Couch more than I do Holcomb as Tim is much less likely to just throw the ball up for grabs than Kelly is.
