Does anyone have any holiday traditions that you enjoy over the holidays that you would like to share. Ethnic or otherwise.

I remember when I was a kid we used to have Christmas Eve dinner at my grandparents (my Dad's side). The table would have straw on it and a tablecloth over the straw. During dinner only candlelight would be used ()actually they didn't have electricity where they lived then ) The candle on the table would be blown out and everyone would look to see which direction the smoke would go. Garlic was passed around the table and people would take a piece and eat it. Then a bottle of whiskey would be passed around and some would drink a "shot". Even as a young kid I was allowed a shot of whiskey for the Christmas Eve dinner.

The meal would consist of dried peas, dried beans, potato pierogi, saurkraut, wild mushrooms that were picked in the woods and a special home baked flat bread......no meat.

Anyone else?????

Pierogi sound like Knishes! MMMMMMM

We used to go out on Christmas Eve and get a tree. You can get some pretty good deals on a live tree on Christmas Eve. It bugged me a lot, but that never seemed to matter much.

My wife's family is a little more ceremonial, if you will. Generally everyone ends up at Grandma's house at some point on Christmas Eve. She usually has a ham and some beans and some homemade bread and a few desserts. People just kind of drift in and out all throughout the day. She is in her nineties now, but she still keeps the invitation open and people still keep showing up.

We really like going to the candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve. It is pretty short, but a wonderful experience. Singing carols and hymns by candlelight is pretty nice.
