Two-time American League MVP Miguel Cabrera has agreed to terms with the Detroit Tigers on a new 10-year contract that will pay him $292 million, a baseball source said.

The new contract, which covers the two years remaining on Cabrera's current deal and eight additional years, is expected to become official later this week, the source said.

According to CBSSports.com, which earlier reported Detroit and Cabrera were closing in on an agreement, the new deal also includes two additional vesting options worth $30 million apiece for years 11 and 12 that could bring the total of the deal to $352 million.

Multiple media outlets have reported that Cabrera needs to pass a physical exam before his new deal is complete.

If the new contract is calculated as a single, 10-year entity, it will surpass the 10-year, $275 million deal that Alex Rodriguez signed with the New York Yankees in December 2007, as the largest in Major League Baseball history.

Based on a career average of 607 at-bats per season and an average of $30 million annually, Cabrera would earn $49,423 per at-bat.

This is reportedly the richest contract in professional sports history at $292 million over 10 years. It also could become a 12 year deal for $352 million if certain criteria are met.

First, let me say that Cabrera is certainly the best hitter in the game right now. But, he's certainly not the best player as his defense is a serious liability and his base running might be even worse than his defense. When he gets on base, it keeps anybody behind him from going anywhere more than one base at a time as well. That, of course, makes intentionally walking him a pretty easy decision in many cases. Not only do you avoid him hitting a home run, but you clog up the bases as well. It's a no brainer. Mike Trout is a better complete player than he is and he will make $1 million this season. The other thing, of course, is that Cabrera is about to turn 31 years old. That's pretty young compared to me, and not bad for a baseball player if you are signing them to a 5 year deal or so, but he will be in his 40's when he is still being paid about $30 million a year. As slow and injury prone as he is now, do you see that getting better with age? He's obviously going to be a DH within a few years as his defense is bad and getting worse as he ages and his body continues to break down. The best DH in the game right now is David Ortiz and he makes $16 million a year.

As an Indians fan, I love seeing the Tigers tie up this much payroll for this long, myself. I just hate the precedent it sets for future contracts.

Freakin' ridiculas. Doctors who save lives don't get that kind of money. He hits a ball, he catches a ball and runs around.

Now, let's be fair, he doesn't always catch the ball.

But seriously, I have never really bought that argument. These guys get paid what they get paid because they generate a ton of money for their employers. They also get paid a ton of money by companies who hire them to endorse their products for the same reason, that they generate income for the companies and they are compensated accordingly.

For a city that is going bankrupt they better keep putting some asses in those seats.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Detroit has no money in it at all, except for the drug dealers and politicians who have ruined the place. The suburbs, must have quite a bit of money is the only thing I can figure, that and the TV money must be pretty good for the owners.
