Call the engraver...

Oh please. How many guys have come from behind to finish decent in a race. Hell, Kurt was a lap down last week and finished 6th.

ANY decent driver can come from the back for a decent finish. He'll be running mid pack within 25 laps.

No fat-ladies are warming up yet....

....yet.

I wouldn't call it over before the race has even begun. But, it doesn't bode well for Jimmie. Then again, as vanzetti said......................the fat lady is only warming up. She hasn't begun to sing yet~ :D I still have faith! :)

HOMESTEAD, Fla.(AP) The car cover was wrapped tightly around the No. 48 Chevrolet, its driver and crew long gone for the day. All around the garage, teams worked feverishly on their cars, but Jimmie Johnson was nowhere to be found.

The absence of the Hendrick Motorsports team after qualifying Friday raised eyebrows everywhere at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Did they go home in disgust after qualifying 39th for Sunday's season finale _ Johnson's worst starting position of the year? Or were they playing mind games with the competition?

No one was really sure.

All that was certain was that it was unusual for Johnson to qualify so poorly. His effort was the worst of his career, surpassing two 37th-place starting spots last season.

But even stranger was that noted perfectionist Chad Knaus, the crew chief, wasn't tearing the car apart trying to figure out what went wrong.

"I heard him on the radio _ it didn't sound like he was disappointed in the lap," Jeff Gordon, Johnson's teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, said. "It sounded like the speed wasn't there."

Johnson heads into Sunday's season finale trailing series leader Kurt Busch by 18 points in the race for the Nextel Cup. Gordon is third in the standings, three points behind Johnson.

Busch won the pole and Gordon qualified fifth. Johnson has a ton of ground to make up on Sunday to even challenge for the title.

Robbie Loomis, Gordon's crew chief and Knaus' partner in strategy, said it was way too early to count Johnson out.

"They probably are as strong as anybody in this garage when they have their backs stacked up against the wall," Loomis said.

I am very impressed with the way the 97 team has handled themselves during this stretch drive.

But how in the world did the 48 team miss the set-up that bad with so much on the line for this race?

Two possible reasons. :)

For all practical purposes Homestead is a new track......this is only the second year since it went through a very major reconfiguration. It just ain't the old Homestead anymore.

And they may have missed the setup for the bonsai run but, did they really work that hard on qualifying when the race is what really counts? A 400 mile race is a long race.......plenty of time to get to the front. And getting to the front is something the 48 team has demonstrated is something it can do.....and do quite well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jeff win the title and Junior lose it by less than the 25 his mouth cost him a few weeks ago. If nothing else it would be entertaining to hear fans of NASCAR's chosen one gripe about the inequality of it all.

Don't worry, it ain't gonna happen............72 points (or even 47, which is what you are wishing for :) ) with one race depends upon way too many "lucky" breaks even if he wins and leads the most laps! You are just going to have wait for another year for that little pleasure! :) Besides, what makes you think that many will truly complain............especially for 14 yrs like I've seen here? :D

My take is Jimmie wins the title, Kurt gets the second seat and Jeff winds up third (right where he is now) and Jr and Mark may or may not trade places. Jeff's going to have to wait for another time............just like Jr. :beerbang:

If Evernham has the #9 working like he did last year for Eliot, Kahne stands a good chance of winning his first race. As for the Cup - I hope rousch wins it for the next.....say...40 years.

Well that would sure change the most hated man in NASCAR from Richard Childress to Jack Roush!! :D
