This track is a little over 125 miles from where I live north of Miami. I have been there many times. I really would have liked to go down this weekend for a race but all three of the races will end at night, which would mean a return trip through Miami at night which isn't one of my favorite things to do. Miami traffic has become a nightmare. Not sure whatever happened to NASCAR scheduling at least one day race. I looked at finding a hotel near the track for any of the races, but the prices were way to high for me, even at the roach motels. Its a shame, because this is a great track to attend a race. No doubt there will be plenty of open seats on Friday and Saturday and lots of options still exist for Sunday.
I just checked Google Maps and if I left now (noon time on a Tuesday) it would take me 4 hours to go 125 miles to get there. :(

^Make a vacation of it by heading down to the Keys afterwards. Margaritaville is beautiful this time of year.

Notes – Cup cars return to Homestead on 2024 tire set-up: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Homestead this week . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup teams ran at Homestead in 2024 . . . this is also the same tire set-up these teams ran at Las Vegas last weekend, and twice at Darlington and on the Charlotte oval last year… with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.

Goodyear quote – Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of glob race tires: “We go to Homestead this week, which is a track that produces some of the best racing on the NASCAR circuit. Homestead has a high tire wear surface that leads to a couple factors that make for good racing. First, the high wear leads to more lap-time fall-off, meaning tire management comes into play and we see more ‘comers’ and ‘goers’ throughout the field over the course of a run. Teams will opt for four fresh Goodyear tires at nearly every pit stop, highlighting the critical role of pit crews. This combination ensures a competitive race for the teams and an exciting experience for the fans.”

I get that. We used to do that and stayed in Key Largo quite a few times. But going down there and to the Keys doesn’t have the same appeal anymore since we have done it so many times and live relatively close. I really just wanted to run down for a race.

I feel this is why Homestead is struggling not being the final race. People are more likely to make it a destination as the Championship. For a regular season race, even the locals have to drive through one of the busiest metros in the country to get there. Almost no one lives south of the track so you’re really only attracting from one direction. This track NEEDS to be the Championship race to survive.

Hate to see the wildfires. This time of year you’re coming to a stretch of the dry season, where brush and vegetation is more vulnerable. Suspect the winds we’ve dealt with are now blowing hard there. Dangerous situation.

Regarding the scheduling from an earlier post; we used to go to the Homestead finale every year when we lived in Fort Myers. After it became clear NASCAR wanted no cars to race any of the four contenders hard, we didn’t return. Then the next year they moved it to Phoenix. Having this race in March is at the height of “season”, when the snowbirds are down making everything more expensive. Hotels are at their peak pricing even without a race event. Sure it’s beautiful and nice temperatures, but many race fans don’t have that kind of cash. The finale in November wasn’t exactly cheap, but we could find somewhat reasonable options in the business suburbs of Miami.
