House Fire

Just two weeks ago my younger sister had a house fire. She and my brother in law lost all there belongings. The fire started on the back porch of a house they were renting. My brother in law smelled smoke and got up to see what was going on. He saw the fire on the porch and woke my sister up. My sister called 911 while my Joe tried to contain the fire with a garden hose. The fire spread to a propane grill and the tank exploded. At this point, he ran back inside to grab the animals. He was able to get the dog, but could not find the cats. While he was inside looking for the cats somebody let the dog out of the cage and he later was struck and killed by a car. They were both devestated but are starting to heal now. Thank God they had renters insurance or they would be starting completly over.

They are blessed that they are ok!

Unfortunately I have been through a similar thing, in '85.

We were lucky and the house didn't burn up, animals were safe, people were safe, but smoke and water ruined most of our "stuff".

After the Insurance people paid for full replacement and repairs, they cancelled our insurance.

I'm so sorry to hear about all their losses. I've often thought about how devastating it would be if that were to happen to me. Sentimental stuff that could never be replaced.... Losing ones pets are like losing a family member. Thank goodness they're alive, and I'll keep them in my prayers.

Kat. Maybe talking to a lawyer can fix the insurance problem. Except in case of arson on the part of an home owner I don't think they can legally cancel the insurance.
If they can, I will be surprised. And even more careful now that I am a home owner.

We did talk with a lawyer and he said they had every legal right to cancel. We had a pipe burst the year before which damaged the LR ceiling downstairs, and the ins. paid for that.

They cancelled due to too many claims and too much $$ paid out.We were considered "High Risk" and over that 2 year period they paid well over $250,000 to our contractors, cleaners, plasterers, plumbers and electrician...as well as replacing linens, clothes, furniture, tile, hotel, apartment during restoration, rental furniture for the apartment, and sooooooooo much more.
I don't believe that insurance agencies are regulated that much even today, but that incident was 17 years ago. We had no problem getting new insurance.
