How are the crews treated by their drivers:

I was just wandering how the drivers treated their crews. I figured since you guys listen to scanners and some of you go to the garage area that you might have some insight on this subject. Anytime that I have been asked if I would consider making the move from nhra to nascar if the opportunity arose, I have said that I didn't think that I would be interested. We have had a few guys make the move, and they all returned with in a few years. They all said it was boring. But I would like to get your insight on the subject.:)
 
22, 18, 29, 42 and the 88 from the TV and I'd say less than good. But look at the pressure these drivers are under on the track. I'd probably be in the less than good category if my car was crap tho. I know the crews are under pressure to, but main focus is usually on the driver.
 
just a thought... i would think that most of the drivers that raced weekly short tracks on their own (without sponsor paid crews) while coming up would have more patience with team members.

the drivers i'm talking about are the ones that would know the difference between a johnson rod and phillips screwdriver.

Kinda like Newman. I think he makes more calls (or, he used to) than the crew cheif
 
I monitor scanners at both NASCAR and IRL races. There tends to be much more chatter on NASCAR frequencies than with their Indy race car counterparts. There are probably a lot of reasons for this. Most of the drivers that I've heard are pretty candid and often abrupt with their crewchiefs and spotters but that goes both ways. I don't think that any of it's personal. Racing at high speeds is an emotional experience and I think that a lot of the talk between teams result from venting their frustrations on the track and part of the sport. The radio traffic on the #29 Budweiser car is alway "interesting" especially if Happy's isn't having a good day at the track. To me having a scanner at the track really enhances your experience and gives you a better insight of how a race unfolds.
 
Back in the day, I heard Big E discuss the ancestry of his crew at length --- starting with RC and working his way down. I also saw the relationship he had with the crew in the garage --- I don't think anyone held a grudge.

Every crew member is under pressure to perform.

And personally, I can get really snippy if things aren't going right. LOL
