How big is an edge? .0625 inch

The Busch Series had its own TIRE WIDTH controversy solved this past weekend. Cars are measured with a special device from wheel to wheel right to left, the tread width. The wider this length, the more stable the car will be.

In the inspection line, the Busch Series officials were inspecting the height of the cars AFTER the tread width was check. Some teams had figured out that by purposely leaving their cars high they could meet the width requirements and then lower the car at the height gage, which would spread their tires up to 1/16th of an inch. Sounds small, but EVERYTHING matters on these cars! The officials noticed that some cars had to be adjusted at the height measurement station with as many as eight rounds of wedge being added.

The officials now check tread width AFTER the car is measured. So, the “cat and mouse” game continues!

An example of what folks are talking about when they say "working the gray area."

NASCAR closes down this hole, but I'm sure there will be 15 more to take it's place.

I am sure there are probably a lot more cat and mouse games going on that Nascar just hasn't caught onto yet.

With the way NA$CAR is specing the cars to death they might as well just make the teams run IROC cars and crate engines.

Love your avatar Mongo!!
Glad you like it. [/b][/quote]
Wow! Another Jeff Gordon fan!

(only a true JG fan could find such a rare picture and have the pride to share it with everyone!)

But back to the topic, it seems like Nascar would have caught on pretty quick with the whole "hold a sec while we crank the wedge here...." routine.

Give a guy an inch.....

Gray area such a good definition of fan involvement to say the least. We as armchair fans can find a gray area in a haystack. ^_^

NASCAR can't seem to please everyone. It seems when a car gets through inspection and a loophole was discoved after the fact, the crowd screams the team is a "cheater".
When NASCAR closes the loophole through due dilligence, the comment of specing the cars to death comes into play. Are fans upset because NASCAR closed up a grey area in the rules ???

There must be a happy medium somewhere, but in my mind, if the inspection process works equally for every player, the racing is better. Or at least as good as it could be under the circumstances. At least with NASCAR trying to stay on top of things through open inspections and specs that work at keeping the playing field as level as posiible, the teams must produce on all levels and this in turn reduces cries of favoritism.
NASCAR still has the option of the mysterious caution flag and other dubious calls with the "ace in the hole " being the blank pages wherein EIRI rules are so carefully spelled out.
