The Busch Series had its own TIRE WIDTH controversy solved this past weekend. Cars are measured with a special device from wheel to wheel right to left, the tread width. The wider this length, the more stable the car will be.
In the inspection line, the Busch Series officials were inspecting the height of the cars AFTER the tread width was check. Some teams had figured out that by purposely leaving their cars high they could meet the width requirements and then lower the car at the height gage, which would spread their tires up to 1/16th of an inch. Sounds small, but EVERYTHING matters on these cars! The officials noticed that some cars had to be adjusted at the height measurement station with as many as eight rounds of wedge being added.
The officials now check tread width AFTER the car is measured. So, the “cat and mouse” game continues!
