Last night Sam Hornish wrecked, finish 34th and still hung on to the points lead by 2 points over Regan Smith who finished 7th. I haven't really been following the points in NNS but I noticed last night that in only 5 races Sam managed to stretch the points lead to 28 points over 2nd place. Other championship hopefuls Elliot Sadler and Trevor Bayne are mired back in 7th and 10th respectively. I know it's early in the season but with a 9 point deficit from 1st to 5th in points and another 26 points from 5th to 6th the cream really seems to be rising to the top early. There is already more than a full race worth of points (53) back to 11th place Kyle Larson. I think were in for a hell of a season but so far IMO Sam Hornish seems to be the class of the field as far as full time NNS drivers go. If he can continue to perform at this level I wouldn't be surprised to see him run away with this championship for Roger Penske.

I like Hornish but he does tend to bend up a lot of sheet metal. Usually by pushing the car beyond it's limits but sometimes pushing himself beyond his abilities.

Hornish is and always has been a wreck waiting to happen. Cant say I am surprised.

Yep...No one to blame but himself...And thats exactly why he's NOT in Sprint Cup...

It's a good thing Kyle Busch can't run for the NW title, otherwise this would be a done deal.

That does raise the point that Hornish is leading the NWS points so he must be doing something right.

I'm just saying if he can keep it up he's looking good. I don't think that wreck last night was entirely his fault. He may tear up a lot of sheet metal but a 28 point lead after 5 races is pretty damn good. A lot of that has to do with the cup guys taking away points from NNS regulars. Sam finishes 2nd to Kyle with 5 cup guys behind him and makes a lot of points. I'm just surprised its already this stretched out after 6 races. 53 points back to 11th. I think its going to be a good season. Although Kyle Busch looks like he will steal a lot of the spot light this year in NW. Wonder if he can beat his record 13 wins.

Cup drivers don't take away points from the regulars. Cup drivers get 0 points in a Nationwide race.

They don't get any points, but if a nationwide driver finishes second after a cup driver, they only get points for the place they finish, in the example 2nd place points. Even though they finish first out of the nationwide drivers. Also the cup driver who finished first earns owner points.

Hornish is a hard racer, and yes, he does trade some paint, but so does a lot of the other racers. I think he has a very good shot at winning the championship this year. If Penske didn't believe in him, then I don't think he would still be there.

So do NWS regulars earn bonus points for leading the most laps even though a cup driver may have actually led the most? What about bonus points for a win, how does that work?

Tell you what, I wasn't much of an Austin Dillion fan. But he put together a deal on his own to run the cup race, qualified it in the top 15, and is only eight points out in Nationwide. Drove a smart race..pretty impressive for a youngster.

nope, they only get what they do. They finish behind four cup drivers, they get fifth place points.

I know the cup drivers get no points I just mean that even if you are the 2nd best finishing NW regular you may get 7th or 8th place points. That's how I mean, by taking positions away. Not actual points. Sam won and finished 2nd a few times with a couple cup guys behind him and that's how he was able to stretch the lead on the other NW guys so fast I think. Just like Austin Dillon last night. Finished 3rd and all the others in like the top 7 or something were cup guys. So he gained a lot of points on the 2nd highest finishing NW regular.

So then cup drivers definitely have an affect on the points received by NWS drivers.
It really isn't that much of an affect . A Cup driver finishing ahead of a Nationwide driver affects all of the other Nationwide drivers too . So while he may move a Nationwide driver from first to second the Nationwide driver in sixteenth moves to seventeenth.

But, he or she could miss out on bonus points for laps led and/or a win. Just ask Carl Edwards what one more points can mean ;)

makes a heck of a difference in points. If a cupper finishes first and qualifies first and leads the most laps.any cupper in the race does one of those or all of them, it makes a big difference. That is why I said Hornish finished a real distant fourth place last year, he was like 105 points behind first place in forth, while second and third places were only 23 and 24 points away from first.

Hornish still has room for improvement, but he is also one of the most improved NWS drivers of 2013.

But last night wasnt a good one. He killed his tires.

We're talking Hornish right ? Eliminating a couple of DNF's will help more than not losing a spot or two to cup drivers.

Okay, the way I see it, there are really only 3 championships contenders at the moment -- Regan Smith, Austin Dillon, and orpf course, Hornish. I forsee them being joined by a fourth driver farther down in the top 10 (Vickers? Sadler? Klingerman?) and then having the championship somewhat mirror last year -- one driver begins to fade back slightly past the halfway point in the year, anither falls back at around Richmond, then it is just down to two drivers battling till homestead. I forsee Austin being the first one to fall back, then the mystery driver, then Smith and Hornish battling it out for the Championship with Hornish winning.

Just my 2 cents.

Good Guess, I see Hornish dropping like a rock unless he can stay out front so he can weave all over the track without hitting or running into the back of the other cars.:) Regan Smith is in a mission, he has good equipment and he is hungry. Sadler will do well as long as he doesn't have to race hard, wheel holding his way into the top five. Stenhouse and crew had a couple of pretty clean seasons, with them out of the way Sadler's chances are better. Larson is running a full season, but I think rookie mistakes will keep him out of #1 but he will be up at the top. Vickers will screw himself out of it like Hornish. So I see Sadler and Allgaier, hoping that Smith, and Dillion screw up down the stretch with Hornish tragically forgetting there is a wall that you need to not hit and Austin Dillion snatching the winning cup.

lol. you obviously base this off of hate for Hornish.

Yeah I heard -- they're both on the points bubble where they have to qualify in the top 36 or go home. Here's to hoping it will be two of the S&Pers that goes home (Riggs, Bliss, McDowell, etc) as opposed to Hornish and/or Sadler. Realisticlly, I highly doubt they will both go home, but I have a bad feeling one of them may be on their way out.

@-StandOnIt: I can tell by your post that Hornish is your favorite driver ;).

:). Don't get me started..I like him behind the mike much better. He will wreck at Kansas..my prediction.. track is not big enough for him and Danica.

Danica will wreck (probably trying to wreck Reutimann, thinking he is Cassill, and wrecking herself instead), but Hornish will get a top 20.

Hornish will be driving over his head, super loose when he laps Danica. he will be doing his dart without feathers imitation. This in turn will start the Danica panic wheel sawing method. Kerblam, one or the other will hit something and they will take out the the other back markers, Cassil, Reut, and company.
