Quote:

Pocono Raceway President Brandon Igdalski told Sirius XM NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody that cutting the track’s two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races from 500 miles to 400 next season is “being considered. We’re looking at things, but we haven’t made that decision quite yet,” said Igdalski. “We’re looking at it for the future, whether it’s this year, next year, or a couple of years down the road. It’s a different sport and a different time than it was years ago, and we’re always looking at things.”

Igdalski took the helm of the historic tri-oval when his grandfather, track founder Dr. Joseph Mattioli, announced his retirement Friday. Igdalski said he was unaware of his grandfather’s plans, adding, “We got a call about 30 minutes beforehand saying, `Be in the Media Center in half an hour.’ I had no idea he was going to retire. My jaw hit the ground.”

Igdalski said he will gradually implement some new ideas and more modern fan amenities at Pocono over time, after traveling the circuit and seeing what other promoters have done.

Pocono 325 or Pennsylvania 350 sounds better.

Don't think shortening the races will improve the racing at all unless you have a mandatory caution with 10 laps to go every week.

How about two 250's? Qualify and race both with same car. If you wreck and have to go to a backup, you start at the back of the field...and have to go in the opposite direction.

That would make PocoNod exciting.

The rain was Mother Nature's way of telling everyone how long a Pocono race should really be. Dale Jr.'s statement on Pocono.

Races there are too long. NASCAR races are no longer races of endurance like they were in the 60's and 70's. With rare exceptions, cars today can easily go 500 miles without any problems. Since they're not trying to conduct high-speed endurance tests, they should be shorter races. Last year's truck race was one of the best races I've seen there because it was only 50 laps.

The 500 mile races at AAA Speedway in Fontucky were real snoozefests for the fans. The drivers all are very aware of the fact that they are diving off into turn 1 at over 200 MPH but it was boring to watch.

They shortened the race to 400 miles and it became a much more exciting event. I like Pocono (I liked the racing better before NASCAR mandated gear ratios) but 500 miles makes for a long afternoon.

Maybe it would be good to have one 500 miler and one 400 miler, like they do at Daytona. But I also like FB's idea of Twin 250 milers! That would be very interesting.

Pocono Shortens Races to 400 Miles

Apparently it's a 'Done Deal'

Starting with the June 10, 2012 Pocono Sprint Cup Series race, the scheduled distance for both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races will be shortened to 400 miles. “The 400 mile distance will make NASCAR racing at Pocono even more exciting,” stated Raceway President and CEO , Brandon Igdalsky. “Race strategies will change, fuel mileage calculations will be altered and I firmly believe that our fans will be treated to outstanding racing at the 400 mile distance.”

Full story.

Trucks will also return to Pocono for the August 2012 race weekend. ARCA will continue at both weekends

Should give one of Pocono's dates to Iowa.

Iowa should get one of Dover's dates. In fact, I'll be shocked if Dover still has two dates next season. If they do, that's two dates they don't deserve... let's see how they do with one Cup date and if things don't improve as far as attendance there and Dover Motorsports Inc. continues to go down the ****ter, pull the plug on it.

I hear tons of fans talk about how much they love Dover and how great they think the racing is and how awesome it is in person... if they believe that, they better start showing up or Dover's gonna go the way of Rockingham, Wikesboro, Mansfield, IRP (unjustly), Nashville, Gateway and Memphis.

Why would you follow Nascar at all, or why not just advocate 10 lap only races.
I hate the phantom cautions, it's a gimmick.

Do you know how to appreciate the skill of one who can be the fastest at the end of a long run?
BTW every race isn't going the greatest ever, racing is a lot like life.

The wave arounds, lucky dogs, and cheap cautions, I hate all the BS.

I have to wonder how much of a difference this is really going to make anyway. Obviously the time that it takes to complete the race will be shortened to a more reasonable window but why will the racing change? 400 miles @ Pocono doesn't exactly create a sense of urgency IMO. 400 miles at Pocono, or any other track for that matter, is a long time. Don't get me wrong, I like the shortened time of the race that the change will bring. I just can't see where it's all of the sudden going to make them race any harder than they do for position until the end of the race as always.

I've been going to Dover forever. It used to be 500 miles. The only difference between then and now is the length of the race. It didn't make the races better @ Dover. The same with Auto Club/Fontana. They shortened that and everyone went apesh&#t with how much better the were. I don't believe for a minute that we've seen the last of the boring races @ that venue. Some are good and some are not so good but 100 miles isn't going to make a difference.

As one that has been quite critical of racing lately, I'd agree now that I've given more thought to shortening the races, that this won't make much difference in the racing. I think the problem is the car itself, the dreaded "aero push" stuff seems to come back to haunt the quality of racing continuously.

This has been a problem for a long, long time. Way before the COT. I honestly can't remember when it first began but I do remember it being a problem with the older cars as well.

I don't remember it being such an issue back in the days of the flat nosed Buicks and the Oldsmobiles, y'know? Seems to me it all started when FORD introduced the new Thunderbird (1987 maybe?) with it's sloped nose and aero-dependency. It's been a problem ever since...

Your going back much further than I was talking about. I was simply talking the model years just prior to the COT. It was still a common thing at that time.

Should give one of Pocono's dates to Iowa.

Unless Iowa gets bought out by a current track owner they won't be getting a cup date anytime soon. Nascar has said that they don't want to expand the season past the amount of races they already have. Also they wont take a date away from any of the current owners, and non of the current owners will give up a date at their track for Iowa. Only reason Kentucky get a Cup race was because Bruton Smith bought them out and took a race away from Atlanta to give to Kentucky.

Yeah IRP was a Nascar decision not a track decision. Hopefully with two dates open next year they can at least give one of those back to IRP.

It is because the track is flat. Look at the other flat tracks on the circuit. They are all boring! Why? Because you can't pass on a flat track. I understand they are fun for the drivers, but they don't do anyting for the fans.

Martinsville?

Martinsville?

The most boring of them all!

I'm glad someone mentioned Martinsville. Probably the best track on the circuit. I'll be in my usual position come October, turn 1-2 terrace with a big a$$ grin in my face watching one of the best races of the year.

Martinsville can be very very boring.

IMHO they need to take about 10 to 15 cars off the track at Martinsville. I say start anywhere between 25 and 30 cars. Sometimes it just seems too crowded.
