Anybody on here have it? Our current ISP uses wireless and it's getting jammed..

thinking of switching.

The last time I looked, it was $600 install and $70 a month for service.

As it is I am paying $45 a month for direct TV but lease the equipement. I wonder how much of the $600 goes towards the equipement....

I have DSL here and it works good...

Are your freinds in isolated areas? I can see going with something like that in a mobile unit and you are moving around alot but why go through the trouble?

You really don't have to be too isloated not to have dsl or cable. My friend lives between 2 towns and can,t get cable or DSL. He's 4 miles to one town and 6 to the other. Plus he's only 7 miles to madison, a popluation of 250,000

That's me, Bucky. I'm 3 miles from the city limits ---- may as well be 3000.

Not a snowball's chance in hell of getting cable or DSL.

The reason I brought up isolated is that I live in a town of about 1800-2000 people and the closest major town is 30 miles away. There is cable available but is cheesy and no broadband. My thought had been is that if there is 'phone service to the house then DSL is available, looks like I was off the mark on that one....

I'm in a town of 400 and 10 miles from a town of 20,000 and 35 miles from a pair of 30,000+ towns.

as for equipment, according to the website, you OWN it. hence the price....wierd.

my friend has it and i actually played on his, he had download of 800 and upload of 400...far beyond his 700/128 cap. When our current service was working we were around 700/84.

I can see your trouble, if you were close to a town of 100,000 plus I would be putting pressure on somebody for something better then dial up...

700/84 as in Ks? That's not much better then dial up....

To step slightly aside, I've recently read that cable modems can be hacked where you basically take the governor off and the speed is increased 10 fold or more. But, they didn't say how it was done. Just that you replace some of the native software in the modem. Anybody got any ideas on unleashing the power I have with my RoadRunner?

From what I have told cable is a shared network, you are sharing your connection with the neibors. That to me would be easier to hack then anything else....
